Witness by Whittaker Chambers, and your observation is what struck me when I read
Rules for Radicals. It is clear that Alinsky viewed religion as claptrap, but had no problems using them as tools, and invoking scripture as part of his book.
Whittaker Chambers understood people like Alinsky all too well, as did his one-time Soviet masters.
