Barbarella" is getting a new lease on life courtesy of producer Dino De Laurentiis.

The veteran Italian filmmaker, who turns 90 on Saturday, is developing a remake of his original 1968 sci-fi movie, which immortalized Jane Fonda as a sex symbol.

Australian filmmaker Robert Luketic ("The Ugly Truth") is attached to direct from a screenplay to be written by Joe Gazzam.

Robert Rodriguez was previously involved with the project, when it was set up at Universal in May 2007, with an eye to making it a vehicle for his girlfriend Rose McGowan. But the studio and director reportedly could not agree on where to shoot. After the parting of ways, a new direction for "Barbarella" was sought.

I couldn't find the panel with the android lover, but here's some examples of the original French comic.

SOmething like that. The fabled “red haired she-devil with a sword” is somewhat less intimidating when you can boot her 40 yards.

He obviously mis-spelled the word on purpose so as not to swear on FR. I’m sure he meant a #2, and the answer to that is a resounding YES!

She may be a commie bitch, but she was very very attractive in that movie.

She was stunning in the movie and she looked like my ex wife when she played Barbarella.

You’ve got to be kidding me? A remake of Barbarella? Does no one in the movie industry have imagination any more?

In fact no. There are a bunch of remakes on the way for 2010 and 2011. In fact, I have seen two movies on Cinemax; “Mirrors” and “Shutter” which were American remakes of a Korean and Thai movie respectivly.

Ug. Even “The Ring” was a remake. I am hoping for good things from “District 9”.

The folks went and saw “Orphan” but I am tired of being grossed out instead of scared. Although they did indicate that there were some previews that looked interesting. “Shutter Island” and “Gamers”... and one more that was a deep space horror thing, the name of which escapes me for the moment.

...although I think it should go to Scarlet Johanson.

Excellent choice. She's just enough of a ditz to make the role work. And she has all the other essential assets.

I have nothing against Sienna Miller, but Sienna Miller doesn’t have the curves for the role. Kate Beckensale might work, but not Sienna.
