I’ve got lots of liberal family members. I’ve found that the best way to deal with them is to make my conservative views known but say little about politics beyond that. Be respectful and kill them with kindness.

From watching their facebook pages etc, I’ve found that they actually have started respecting me and even defending my views to some extent.

I’m in the same situation as you are. My cousin and her husband, a brilliant math professor, voted for Zero. However, they are beginning to understand the concept of “you can only spend what you have.” The fact that the prof won’t get his cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) and may start receiving IOUs for his salary really has him ticked.

The fact that my mom, a fairly conservative person, helped bail them out of some recent high debt (with a very low-interest loan) probably helped change their minds a little. The prof and my cousin seem much more skeptical of big government these days.
