Cruise Ship Hits, Impales Whale

VANCOUVER -- It wasn't a pretty sight, but whale watchers on a cruise ship in Canada got more than they bargained for when they arrived at the port of Vancouver -- a dead whale stuck to the bow.

The vessel apparently struck the 70-ton fin whale in the ocean and unknowingly carried it wedged to the bow from Alaskan waters to the Canadian port. The adult whale was an estimated 70 feet (21 meters) long.

The Princess Cruise Lines' Sapphire Princess was docked at the Canada Place terminal Saturday with the whale stuck to it.

"Basically like a train coming through, it just hits them. That bow is kind of like a spear. And once they're hit by it, it probably breaks their back, kills them almost instantly," Craig Delahunt of Tymac Launch Service told AP Television News.

You don’t think they have a big stick that they could just pry it off with.... :)

"Ummm...ah...Captain...do you know where the whale stick is?"

"Why?"

"Ummm...no reason. Forget I asked."

Full reverse might have worked.

I tried that after hitting a deer with my truck. Didn't work.

After all, that's how I get the pedestrians off the hood of my car after I speed through crosswalks.

That doesn't work if you're driving this sucker:

I like the Sea Shepard and am all for them interfering with the Japanese fleet doing “research” on 960 whales a year ... Our entire family never misses the “Whale Wars” show, and we’re hard core conservatives.

I’d feel better about their mission if they were on the right side of the law. I hope they all die with a massive shipboard fire, queched by the icy southern ocean waters. Scumbags.

Why are you against whaling if it’s done in a responsible manner?

Even Greenpeace admits that there are species of whales that can be harvested now without cutting into the birth/death rate too deep. It is some of the smaller ones, but still why are whales off limits completely but all other mammals are mostly allowed if they aren’t endangered?

I guess this settles the age-old question: what would win, whale vs. cruise ship

They need to install one of those bug/whale deflector thingies across the front of the ship.

Have you noticed that Scumbag uses all kinds of weasel words when talking to the so called first mate, not even old enough to buy a razor for Pete sakes. He always says things to the crew that will put himself in a position to say, “I never told them to launch those boats and go harass the whaling ship.” And I always wonder how come he is being called to the bridge all the time. Does he sit in his cabin drinking all day or what?

“He always looks like he just got done sucking down a quart of wiskey when he comes onto the bridge. “

Cut him some slack. He probably learned his seamanship on the Exxon Valdez. Maybe he's Joe Hazelwoods long lost brother :~)
