I am deeply troubled and disturbed by your recent comments concerning the arrest of Henry Gates by Cambridge Police Sergeant James Crowley. I am disturbed both as a citizen of our great country of which you pledged to support and as a police officer.

As the president you are entitled to your personal opinion, but I would expect as an educated person and the president that you would realize that public comments without facts is irresponsible. In my duties as a police officer I must withhold personal opinions as they are not seen as personal opinions, but that of a professional police officer. Even more so your opinions carry much weight as the president.

You, Sir, should be encouraging all citizens of our nation to respect the authority of the police, but you have undermined our authority by your comments. By doing so you have actually endangered police officers as well as citizens who may choose to resist police authority. You have empowered others to disobey police officers.

I would think as an educated black man that you would desire to encourage young black men as well as all young people to cooperate and respect the laws of our nation and our police officers, but you have done just the opposite. I encourage you if you are a truly responsible person and leader to immediately apologize to the Sergeant Crowley as well as all U.S. police officers and urge citizens to cooperate with the police.

I have become politically active because of the actions of the occupier of the White House. I will defend to my death the right to live my life the way I was raised by my parents, true American citizens. I hope many will also.

I applaud your friends effort, however, Obama won’t listen, he doesn’t care what we think.

If clear thinking black folks would step forward, they ‘might’ stand a chance of impacting this jerk, but I won’t hold my breath....

It seems more and more that the greater number of Blacks want us further separated, segregated and at each others throats. My take is they are going to get what that have begged for, and much, much more.

I had pretty much the same thoughts; they won’t listen, but I won’t tell him that. I don’t want to be discouraging or cynical. His letter and tone are very respectful, given the situation, far more respectful than I would be I’m afraid.
Appreciate the responses. The demagogue on the video is hate-filled and divisive.
