Most of the athletes at the top of their game are somewhat "all about me". It's kinda hard to be up there if they're not. They have to love the stage.

Even Tom Watson, genuine Nice Guy, who almost just pulled off a miracle at the British Open, has a sort of underlying confidence that I find almost annoying, but you have to believe you can beat everybody else to get there.

I agree. To be the best there has to be a selfishness
to get there. Perhaps self absorbed is better.
However, some of the best are also the most gracious.

The ultimate in my favorite miserables is Ben Hogan.
