“At the present time there is no digital media that can preserve data for more than a few years,” said O'Connell.”

A few years? Is this true, or is he trying to pitch his product? Everything I have read about storing movies, and pictures onto DVD-Rs is that the media will last many years if not decades.

Here is a story (not trying to sale anything) from audioholics, on DVD longevity.

http://www.audioholics.com/education/audio-formats-technology/cd-and-dvd-longevity-how-long-will-they-last

With around 1800 movies on DVD and DVDR in my movie library, I am keeping my fingers crossed that they outlast me.

Data storage is an ongoing process. An average hard drive lasts a few years. We are still getting info in stone carvings from thousands of years ago around the world. For posterity if no other reason, a better knowledge store is needed.
