‘Half-Blood Prince’ is strong warm-up for finale

Battling the dark forces takes a back seat to romance and Quidditch

By Alonso Duralde Film critic msnbc.com contributor updated 4:25 p.m. ET, Tues., July 14, 2009

Call it the calm before the storm, but “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” goes out of its way to balance its own dark doings — to say nothing of the dire events to come in the two upcoming movies based on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” — with more character and atmosphere than we’ve seen in the last few movies.

If you’ve been missing Quidditch matches, love triangles, hanging out in the Gryffindor common room and general Hogwarts-iness, you’ll have a great time with this latest sequel.

I'm sure I'm over-stating this, but I swear some directors really try too hard to make sure everyone "gets it".

I thought it was more to show how dangerous these times are. Even the Weasleys, powerful wizards affiliated with The Order, can be and were violated in their home.

Although, I really don't understand either how they were able to get to The Burrow itself and around the enchantments. I try not to think about that much.

2. It emphasizes once again Harry's rashness and the ease in which he can be lured into a trap.

And at the end, he stands dumbly by while someone he has never trusted takes a horrible action.

I'm not disagreeing with you, just the way they portrayed the character. The first action was within character, the second was not.

They cut out the ton-tongue toffee in Goblet, and now they cut out Dudley telling Harry he wasn’t a waste of skin and shaking his hand?

That's the next book. There is still time!

Her statement that Dumbledore was gay in her mind sort of poisoned my mind towards her. And Umbridge being compared to Thatcher, ridiculous. She was so much more like Clinton’s Sec. of State than Thatcher!!!

Although she never announced it in the books, there are a lot of clues that Dumbledore is homosexual, without ever stating it.

I always thought Umbridge was more like 0bama's Secretary of State.

Rowling was divorced and worked on the book part time while teaching English. She applied for a grant to the Scottish Arts Council to give her time to finish the first Harry Potter book, and used the grant to write full time until the book was finished. While waiting for the book to be purchased by a publisher, she returned to teaching English. Rowling is multi-lingual, and also taught French. She didn't give up teaching until Scholastic bought the US rights to the first Harry Potter book, which provided her with enough money to write full time.

She was hardly a welfare queen.

Rowling may be considered a lefty, and may even consider herself one, but her writing is all to the contrary.

I find total conservatism and values respect in her books.

I enjoyed the movie very much.

It’s a problem. If one has read the books, as I have, you notice so much that’s been changed or left out ... maybe your favorite scenes.

But if you haven’t, I just wonder if some things would make sense. Maybe they do.

Condensing a 600 plus page book into a 2 1/2 hour movie is an incredible task. On the whole, they did well.

I like Orson Scott Card but his jealousy of Rowland is kind of petty. Her books have outsold his Endgame, which he, of course, thinks is better. I disagree.

Rowland had every right and reason not to emphasize that Dumbledore had homosexual leanings, but aside from the brief and ill-fated romance that destroyed his family and essentially formed his character, I believe he was celibate.

If she chose to keep him in the closet,it was a wise choice.

In the books, Rowling's strength was that she could create characters that truly seemed to breathe. I went back and read some books by Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton after finishing the Harry Potter books, and the lead characters seemed like cardboard cutouts.

In the book, after Dumbledore was killed and Harry was standing by his body, Hagrid couldn't get Harry to leave, and Ginny just walked up and took his hand and led him away. It was a little touch that showed the thought she put into her characters.

OTOH, Rowling has some of the most absurd plot holes imaginable. The one that's always gotten me is that they selected Pettigrew as the secret keeper. I thought the secret keeper had to be someone who didn't live at the house, but Bill was the secret keeper for his and Fleur's house. So why didn't James Potter just be the secret keeper for his house?

In Prisoner of Azkaban, it never occurred to Dumbledore or Snape to check the tunnel Dumbledore had set up for Sirius' best friend to see if that was how he was getting into the castle?

In Goblet of Fire, they spent nine months trying to get Harry to win the TriWizard Tournament so he could touch the TriWizard Cup and get transported to Voldemort when they could have made anything a portkey and transported him anytime during the term? And how come the TriWizard Cup was the only portkey that took you back when you touched it again? None of the other portkeys did that. Oh, and what was with the TriWizard events, anyway? The crowd is supposed to be excited about looking at the surface of the lake for an hour, or watching the outside of a hedge? How come, except for the dragons, all the events had an audience, but the audience couldn't see what the competitors were doing?

I would be hideously disappointed if they don’t wrap up the Dursley story line.

I’m still holding out hope for Director’s Cuts at some future point. I would hope they would be too greedy not to produce them. Heehehee

I haven't seen anything about his health, but in OOTP, Richard Griffith, who plays Vernon Dursley, looked terrible. He's always been overweight, but he was huge.

I was expecting him to keel over in the movie. I thought maybe his health was a problem, but it looks like he's still doing stage work, so most likely they just didn't believe the Dursley subplot was necessary.

Hey, my daughter and I went to watch the movie. It was alright, the acting was superb all the way around. The boy who plays Draco really did a good job. Ron getting the love potion was a funny scene. :) I just hate that they didn’t do the fighting scene between the DA and the deatheaters. That would have been cool. Also, I hated the added scene with the house being burned down. I know they can’t do everything in the books, but they should stick to them a little more. I may be getting crabby too. :)

No, I was not. I had assumed that your screen name was derived from the lead character of “The Fugitive”. The real murderer in that show/movie was “the one-armed man”. As I said, I had initially (incorrectly) posted that RK had one arm. Hope that clears it up...

Thanks Buck, I've seen your postings before, and that comment, as I took it, seemed wildly out of character for you. Sorry I didn't get the joke.
