U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson is calling for tens of thousands of pythons believed to be in the Everglades to be hunted and killed, a proposal blasted by animal rights advocates.
Nelson sent a letter on Tuesday to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, asking for permission to have deputized agents and volunteers kill as many of the snakes as possible during an organized hunt. The senator's request comes after a 2-year-old central Florida girl was strangled by an unlicensed pet python in her home.

Too damn bad. They’re not supposed to be there anyhow.
Someone needs to tell PETArdation that women are capable of wearing clothes.
When will the ACLU sue them for sexism?
Any chance the pythons will be collected and dropped in PETA’s office?
Okay....
The idiots had a pet Python .... Nelson wants to kill the wild Pythons.... *sigh*
Nelson is my Senator and I got his email about the incident and this asnine idea
I wrote him back asking if he gone senile because of ALL the things going wrong in florida he thinks it is important to write me freaking SNAKES
Growing up in FL, when I was younger I kept a few snakes, even a large boa for a year a Bostonian friend had no place for when he left (it had to go when it grew large enough to pose an accidental threat to other household pets.) These are a legitimate nuisance. Native/Non-native, they can kill livestock, pets, and yes potentially people (albeit, the big one are deeper in the everglades for now.) Gators are predictable and are a respected member of the state ecology, easily managed. These can roam whereever and if we cull some/most in the wild so be it - better for all. And the ‘animal rights’ folks can pound sand.
Someone needs to make a poster of a snake gruesomely devouring an antelope, with the following caption—”Hunting: if it’s good enough for nature, it’s good enough for me.”
“of ALL the things going wrong in florida”
I don’t think there are that many things wrong with Florida, aside from what the feds are doing of course.
We could use a new Gov and a couple new Senators.
Extremely large non-native snakes should be eradicated but its not the pythons that are the huge worry for me. Its the black mamba’s that have escaped that kinda scare me.
I’m waiting for PETArdation to start throwing buckets of fake blood at snakes for their cruelty to sheep.
Still waiting...
Personally, I think this is a great idea. The non-native snakes are a nusiance, and I have no problem with eradicating them.
What would be really great, IMHO, is if there was a way to turn this into a money-maker for all involved. The DNR could make a few bucks issuing hunting permits, obviously. But I wonder if there would be a way for the snake hunters themselves to make some money, too? Python skin boots are popular exotics, and I’ve seen a couple online places deal in the meat.
Be a real neat thing if they turn a pest into profit, IMHO.
Works for me!
I thought pythons were vegetarians?
parsy, who has read some PETA stuff
True they eat greens
I'll bet all those lovers of deadly creatures on someone else's property will not save any.
Ugh, mosquito's, flies, crocks, snakes, spiders we don't want to go in there....
