One thing I still don’t understand is how Ann could be divorced if there is no Hawaiian record of her ever being married?

For lots of purposes, marriage is a somewhat looser concept. An affidavit under oath from the party seeking to dissolve a marriage is going to be taken as conclusive that she was married for that purpose. We have lots of local law marriages--common law marriages and the like which in many jurisdictions doesn't require anything but the two parties living together for a while and telling people they were married.

And the fact that she spent several thousand bucks getting the marriage dissolved, together with her oath that they were married is likely to be viewed as pretty conclusive that they were married--otherwise why did she do that?

One thing no one did from an investigative point of view was look for evidence that they were married in Kenya which is what I speculate happened.

The marriage date was between terms at U of H and he returned to school the next term. Further, there is evidence that she and her family were estranged following the time she told them she was pregnant. Where did she live from then until August?

Marriage in Hawaii where the legend has them married would have constituted the crime of Bigamy.

I have always thought what happened is that they went to Kenya between school terms; got married; she stayed and developed a relationship with his family. When she tried to get home so that her kid was born in the US, she was too pregnant to get on the flight.
