An animal welfare advisory board to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is recommending the city ban the veterinary practice of de-clawing cats, except in cases of medical necessity.
The San Francisco Commission of Animal Control and Welfare voted 5-1 Thursday in support of a ban, arguing the practice is cruel and often done simply for cosmetic purposes or to prevent pets from clawing furniture, Commission Chair Sally Stephens said. Stephens said the procedure involves amputating the last bone in a cat's paw and, though doctors use anesthetic, some cats can suffer long-term pain and behavioral changes, such as refusing to use a litter box. "So basically it's kind of barbaric," Stephens said.

If they make declawing illegal, they’ll just do it in dirty back alleys.

When kids get their eyes clawed out, these bureaucrats won't care.
BTW, I had a cat once, I got her declawed and she went right back to using the litter box and going about her business 2 days later.

My opinion is that if you can’t enjoy living with a WHOLE animal... then don’t get one.

This gives me an idea for a new business. Travel agency catering to cat owners who want to send their cats out of San Fran for a weekend of sun, fun and discrete cosmetic surgical procedures. Duh.

That’s a crock, no bone is amputated when a cat is declawed. And only the front claws are removed.

Not for my cats. Front and back, both of ‘em. They’re inside-only cats though.

Thats a crock, no bone is amputated when a cat is declawed. And only the front claws are removed. The procedure is no different than having your toenails clipped. But facts don't matter to animal-rights wackos.

How about cat juggling? Is that still legal in certain South American countries?

Mine are indoor only. But I would NEVER declaw them - EVER.
To: JoeProBono
I had a indoor/outdoor cat declawed (front only) after he shredded a sofa. I regretted it the moment I saw him post surgical. He, however, relearned to climb fences and catching rodents...pretty amazing. The only thing he couldn’t do was defend himself...and that is what took his life.

...and that's why you NEVER declaw an indoor/OUTDOOR cat!! I have no problem with declawing a cat that spends it's entire life indoors.
