Police Say They Didn't Know About Talent Show
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Black Expo representatives said Thursday that a preliminary round of a talent show after which shots were fired during a fight Wednesday night isn't an official event of IBE's Summer Celebration.
Indianapolis police arrested a juvenile in connection with gunfire outside the Indiana Convention Center Wednesday night following a Star Quest talent show.
About 1,500 people were leaving when shots rang out at about 11 p.m., police said.
"Some people said, 'Somebody's got a gun,' and everybody's running every which way trying to get out of there," said witness Clayton Thomas. "It was all starting to get chaotic."
No one was injured, but police were miffed that they didn't know about the event.
"We were not aware of this event," said Sgt. Paul Thompson. "Next Tuesday are the semifinals for this event, and they expect as much as 4,500 people, which is three times that crowd. IMPD is very aware of that and will have the necessary resources on hand to ensure everything's peaceful."
In a news release Thursday morning, IBE President and CEO Tanya Bell said that the talent show becomes an official Summer Celebration event after the preliminary rounds.

Well, it seems like the "preliminary rounds" were capped off last night, now the final rounds can begin. I wonder if you get better scores with the judges if you hold your Glock sideways?
Ahhhh, yes.
The “Black Expo”.
When parents let their “youts” roam downtown Indy, unsupervised, until dawn.
And then bitch and moan when their kids are beaten by their own or arrested by the cops.
It’s getting better each year.
Indy’s started to put visitors and residents on notice.
I tend to stay down here in Martintucky when this goes on.
Who knew the talent judges would reject an entry in the “urban warfare” category?
This would never happen at Indiana White Expo!
Hey, wait just one minute. After reading the Brinks blog above, it must have been another rabid middle class white guy popping off rounds. Who else in that crowd coming out of the IBE would do such a thing? To even consider such a thing makes you a terrible racist!
Yes it would, but then it would be national news and the term “hate crime” would be bandied about by the talking heads.
Bushs’ fault,,,somehow..
They damn well should have warned people about taking MLK drive away from the Hoosier dome.
There’s nothing wrong with gunfire and black people congregating. It’s as natural as the shizzle...
I got a buddy that lives in Martintucky and that’s exactly what he calls it.
We moved down here from Michigan.
Can you say Culture Shock?
They should ask Atlanta about Freaknik and how that all worked out.
Yeah...he sent Tom Knapp and Tim Bradley and plenty of Federal ammo.
LOL.
They nuked the Hoosier Dome (which was really RCA stadium at the end) in favor the “Lucas Oil Complex” boondoggle.
And some “doo gooder” inner-city “youts” were trying to get all of Michigan Avenue declared as MLK Blvd, but the business owners and residents of the northern stretch wouldn’t have any of it.
WHen I first saw the headline, I thought it said “Talent Show Gunfire not AN official Black Expo Event”.
It seems very exclusionary not to allow the gunfire talent show competition.
