This was posted on FR the other day but the links were to the band's own website and don't seem to be working today. So I am posting again...whatever you think about the guy's decision to send his Taylor through baggage, the song is very catchy and has certainly gotten UA's attention :-)

Whou would send a $2000+ acoustic guitar through checked baggage?
If I had a Taylor, it would never leave my sight.

They also lose a lot of luggage owned by our beloved Marines.

Blame the victim.

This is more nanny-state garbage.

While my DH and I were waiting for a plane after we had checked in, we thought we would grab a quick snack and cocktail so headed to a little lounge off the terminal. From our vantage point we could watch the baggage handlers load and transfer bags. We saw transport carts with their trailers careening around, the back trailers whipping like the terminal kid in a game of “crack the whip”. A bag or two would fall off and then some kid would throw it into another cart going in an opposite direction. It was sobering to watch.

The marines need to get together an put out a YouTube vid to get any justice. LOL. Bless your kiddo.

I have a checked my Taylor guitar a number of times (never with UA) and never had a problem. The cases are very durable.

Hey, when I fly, I carry on anything valuable or fragile. They’re not supposed to break stuff, they’re not supposed to break your stuff, but I’m still not going to leave it up to them. It’s flier beware.

In this case it’s airline beware. The guy you screw might post a video that goes viral.

In fact, one time Quantas almost sent my clothes to China. This is just the sort of thing that happens when you check baggage.

You break it you fix it. Or endure a well deserved public humiliation.

I can’t understand why you are defending these donkeys. Do you or a close family member work for United?

UA broke his guitar, he didn’t.

UA provides a service that he paid for. UA failed in providing that service.

UA could have satisfied the customer (over their negligence) on the spot, they should have, they didn’t and they didn’t even try.

Frankly, they could have made all of this go away had they treated the victim as a customer, so I don’t blame him one bit for exacting his pound of flesh.

I like the guys attitude, his spirit, and, I kinda like his music too. ;>)

I worked for Delta back in 99’

You don’t want to even know what happens to your bags and it is a small miracle they make it to their correct destination.

I’ve seen expensive cargo like Cisco routers sit out on the ramp in the rain and snow.

Who says I’m defending them?
I don’t understand why a person can’t make a common sense comment around FR without someone a) accusing them of being ‘pro’ or ‘anti’ something, and then b) accusing them of having some sort of vested interest for or against the party in question.

You have to understand something here. I can tell you as a guitarist with several valuable guitars, every guitar is unique and has personal value. A guitarist who really cherishes their prized guitar does not leave it in just anybody’s hands.

So yes, United should replace the broken guitar, but that’s not going to bring the guitar back. Just like if they killed your cat they should get you a new one, but it won’t replace Mr. Whiskers.

I believe it. When we were at the airport where I reported seeing the seriously deficient baggage handling, we were on our way out to CO for a ski trip. Just prior to the trip my husband purchased a heavy duty hard plastic ski case. I thought the case was dorky and way overkill until I saw the baggage handlers tossing around that luggage. ;-)

I won’t discuss the subject with you as it’s clear we would never agree.

However, I would like your input as to what makes a Taylor guitar special?

Okay, I will assume quality and expense, but what about it makes it an item of envy by guitarists?

“This is more nanny-state garbage.

“I didn’t pack my luggage properly and the airline broke it.””

My wife and I watched from the window of a United Airlines airplane and saw our brand new leather suitcases thrown at least ten feet into the air. One of them came down on it’s corner and the frame was broken. When I complained later I was treated like the suitcase and some of the contents being destroyed was somehow my fault.

I received no apology when we complained. In fact the person laughed as they told me the only way I would ever receive any compensation was if the bag and contents were all burned beyond recognition. Then he said that I wouldn’t be compensated then either because I wouldn’t be able to prove it was mine. That was the last time we flew on United Airlines.

The employees of United not only mistreated our baggage, they did it in plain sight of their passengers. Explain why they would do that, will you? “Nanny State garbage” my butt, how old are you spoiled princess?
