NEWPORT BEACH A female high school athletic trainer pleaded guilty today to having an unlawful sexual relationship for one year with a male high school student.
Hope Ashley Jacoby, 24, San Juan Capistrano, faces three years' probation including 30 days' Caltrans service at her sentencing July 29 before Superior Court Commissioner Greg Jones.
She pleaded guilty to seven felony counts involving sexual contact with a minor.
Jacoby admitted that she had an unlawful sexual relationship in 2008 with a male student she met while working as an athletic trainer at Tustin High School.

Arguing rather a law is either right or relevent is not relevent in this case. The law exists and she broke it.
Didn’t realize “Teddy Boy” was on a diet...
Hospital food.
It seems there is a double standard only when the female is attractive. The woman is messed up and should be kept away from all kids.
Au contraire. When this country was founded, a little thing called jury nullification was a welcome part of the system. It was used so the jury of peers could overcome the stupidity of the ruling/bureaucratic class. It's only in the last few 70 or so years that jury nullification has become the legal standard.
If I was on this woman's jury, nullification would certainly be in order. We have literally millions of state and federal laws, and a whole bunch of them are asinine.
And now she's a convicted felon and a sex offender. Hardly a slap on the wrist.
Sex with a minor is sex with a minor. Period. They are breaking the law, they are adults in positions of power over these younger children and teens.
Women should get totally equal treatment as male sex offenders. You want to talk about trauma? The guy on the hook for a pregnant 30-ish teacher? The teacher who just can’t stop herself from contacting the kid and having sex in the car and getting pregnant again?
It has NOTHING TO DO WITH TRAUMA. Sexual predator laws do not say we only enforce them when MEN break them. Your attitude is why things are the way they are.
Interestingly, the OLD law on statutory rape only applied to men. Obviously it had to be changed for constitutional reasons, but this double standard goes back years and years.
Well then let your kids just hump anyone and everyone, you seem to have a laissez-faire attitude about it. Let’s just abandon self-control and turn the schools into caligula’s den. Seems unfair the only adults that get to pick young sex partners are the teachers.
Congrats to you.
Exactly. And who says that a teenage boy getting an adult female pregnant or getting a disease from her wouldn’t be traumatic?? The laws are on the books for a reason folks. Follow them or be willing to go to jail.
Kind of heavy for a trainer, no? Somebody should post Vaness Marcil’s picture in contrast. Now THAT would be worth going to jail for.
To be technical, "society" is the "victim" as this is a strict liability law for public policy purposes. Strict liability doesn't adress intent since it does not matter here. It's like other crimes of smoking a joint, boating violations in some states, or speeding.
And, what an incredible waste of money and manpower she'll be to taxpayers for the rest of her life. She didn't seduce a sixth grader. At one time in this country, 16 and 17 year old men, well, they were men. We should get back to that, and in a hurry.
“I would be congratulating my 15 year old son if he hit that!”
Then where does it stop if we don’t stop her?? What if she goes for a 13 year next time? Or a 10 year old? Someone needs to stop her because she is obviously sick in the head.
Though clearly she violated trust all around and should certainly lose her job and be punished in some way.
The school came out immediately and announced she had made a terrible mistake and would not be fired. If you had seen the video, you would wonder why? It was very bad!
However, if a male teacher had done the same exact thing thing, performing the same sex act, and had sent it to his 5th grade class, then he would have been fired immediately. The parents would have been up in arms about it.
Yes, there is a double standard, because there are two sexes and they're DIFFERENT.
That's just ridiculous. What if, what if, what if...
You can't compare having sex with a 15 year old with pedophilia. A 10 year old barely resembles a man. By our late teens, we are (physically) mature, and ready, willing, and able to have sex. At ten, this is simply not true. I am sure she wouldn't get any kind of sexual gratification if she were somehow able to get a 10 year old boy to have sex with her. Yuck. I can't believe I am saying this stuff. Apologies to the people subjected to reading the above filth. No offense was intended. My point is that we can't go around accusing people of being pedophiles just because they have sex with a teenager. It ain't the same thing by a long shot.
Not true. I just know that there is no way to keep a leash on them all the time. All I can do is teach them as best I can and trust them to be mature about it. But I am realistic in knowing that there is no way to stop it completely short of castrating the boys and locking the girls in a closet 'til they're 30. :)
Seems unfair the only adults that get to pick young sex partners are the teachers.
Your other point is well taken, however.
The young man better not get his hopes up because the swallows always return to San Juan Capistrano.
