Today is day one! Armstrong riding. Astana is back! Predictions? Other comments? Does someone have the ping list from last year?
Astaloza has joined the 2 leaders.
LA making a move to bridge to the pursuit group.
LA making MAJOR move!!! He’s coming across the gap. Passes Jens Voight, has already blown away Frank Schleck.
LA made it, 3 Astana in the elite group!.
Yeah, it looks like Lance wasn’t worried about the attack at first, figuring they will all catch up on the descent — but once it approached 1 minute I think he realized that he needs to bridge and get back to the Contador group.
This tells me that while he is playing “Team helper” he is also making sure he positions himself to take over if Contador cracks.
Contador has shown in the past that he sometimes “hits the wall” and this is now three attacks on Mountain stages, with 3 more including Ventoux to come.
I am beginning to wonder if Lance is keeping his powder dry, and waiting for Saturday. If Contador is still strong I full expect Lance to sheppard him up Ventoux, but if Contador cracks I would bet Lance takes advantage both for himself and to keep the win with Astana.
Contador never flinched, kept up w/ the Schleck bros easily.
Thanks for keeping me UTD. At work today, will check in as I can.
Pellizoti takes 2nd hill, 50 climbing points for him today.
First Ital mtn winner since 1992?
That was quite a show by Lance there, and quite a message. He basically just told Contador and everyone else, I still have it.
Lance may play good team member and finish second on Sunday, but he just told Contador “I LET you go yesterday”
Back in France, a ‘savage and technical’ descent, 31km I think.
Cadel is trying to close on the elite group.
The Contador group picking up seconds - now less than 2 minutes behind the leaders.
Jens Voight crashed at 50mph, regular Arty Shaw?? (laugh in) move. Musta slid 25 feet.
Contador / LA’s group climbed Petit St Bernard 2’30” faster than the small leader group, thanks to the attacks by the Schleck bros.
Leading group of four: Pelizotti, van den Broeck, Astarloza, and Moinard. 25 seconds ahead of a group of five and 1’45” ahead of Contador, LA, Wiggins, Klöden, the Schleck brothers and 6 more riders.
Let us know how Voight is if they report. I am sure he has one hell of a road rash.
I am following on line blogs only..no video at work.
It’s a brutal descent!
Yellow 1’30” behind, they’re gaining. Amazing how fast they go through the switchbacks! Ballzzzz of steel.
One more fall: Gomez Marchante - but he is back on his bike.
Stopping riders at the bottom - do they use 4 cables like an aircraft carrier, or just the big net / barrier they raise to catch the planes that miss? ;)
Was Voigt able to get back on the bike?
No news on Jens Voigt yet, but Swedish Eurosport commentators don’t think he will be able to finish the stage. It was a bad fall.
