Shameless Joe Jackson
The Root ^ | June 30, 2009 | Jimi Izrael

On the red carpet at the BET Awards, as CNN’s Don Lemon interviewed him, Joe Jackson was contemptuous and put-off, willing to give only terse, perfunctory answers to complicated questions. Jackson, resembling a baked potato in a pair of cheap sunglasses, came off more as a gold miner eager to stake a claim than the grieving father of his world-famous son.

I have friends who have lost parakeets, dogs, guinea pigs and wino uncles, and they’ve spent more time in mourning than Michael Jackson's father. I've been more distraught over bad sushi. He struck me as someone with a hurried agenda—in a hurry to cash a check—more than a man who has lost a son. What kind of grieving father pulls in publicists to give a statement about their grief, or a lawyer/yes-man, or some kind of micro-pimp huckster in a wide-brimmed hat to talk up some bootleg Blu-ray disk scheme?

At the BET Awards, Joe Jackson seemed far less interested in his son’s legacy, the lingering questions surrounding his death and the children he left behind. Instead, he took the opportunity to try to market some new brand of pop-music smack on the world. It was a bad look.

Joe Jackson grieves not for his dead son but for his lucrative gravy train that has just run off the rails.

Didn’t he used to beat his son, and wasn’t he the one responsible for turning Michael Jackson into a freak? Is anyone surprised by this??

I had a friend e-mail me about this. She said that Joe Jackson was more interested in promoting his company than he was in honoring his late son's memory. I guess now that the main bread winner is gone Joe needs to come up with something else.

That is just one sick family. I really worry about the three children that are now in Katherine's care.

Fox just reported that MJ’s 2002 Will leaves NOTHING to Joe. Good for Michael.

Are all of his other children freaks? They seem okay in comparison to the King of Pop. It seems to me that Michael Jackson surpassed his siblings in talent and on the DSM IV R by just acting naturally. His father’s a low-life jerk, but he’s not smart enough to have created the kind of insanity that Michael Jackson displayed. Michael Jackson is like out of some crazy science fiction novel by Phillip K. Dick. It was only a couple of years ago he was traipsing aroud Bahrain in a burka...

I heard him speak the other day and was stunned. All those decades with money and he can barely speak English. If he’s spent the time speaking lovely and fluent Tagalog or Italian, I’ll give him a pass, but the man cannot even get his plurals and singulars straight, let alone verb agreement.

Those poor kids! Joe Jackson will find a way to exploit these kids anyway he can.

I was shocked when I heard Joe say, “Michael will be bigger dead than he was alive”. I guess by “bigger”, he means more lucrative. What a shame!
