I believe that it's an indication of how naive and easily fooled so many people are. Because someone is heralded as a great performer and perhaps is able to produce a few tunes that they like, many people become starstruck and dispense with any and all normal wariness that good parents have when allowing their children to interact with strangers. Magnifying that in this case is the issue of race, which to many self-loathing white liberals means that a black man with huge international stardom is not only someone whom they will trust completely and without reservation of any kind but is someone whom they will make any extra effort to accommodate, being passionately eager as they are to demonstrate to themselves and their friends how non-racist they are. Being able to say "Yes, I left my children with Michael Jackson for the weekend, isn't it wonderful?" is akin to saying "I'm not a racist and this proves it" for some. I have met several white women who in a moment of honesty told me that they dated black men merely to make a statement to their friends about how liberal and non-racist they are. And for the lurkers with the chips on their shoulders, no, I'm not saying that "ALL" white women who date black men are that way. It is, however, an absolute fact that I have met several who have said that they had done just that.
Being starstruck also will cause many people to overlook wrongdoing, regardless of the scale and regardless of the severity. We've all seen it with the Clintons, who can commit any illegal act and even violate the law to the point of a Presidential impeachment, but they will always have their legions of adoring fans who rush to explain away the transgressions and cover for them in any way, even to the point of 'falling on the sword' themselves. We saw it with O.J. Simpson, where mountains of evidence were pooh-poohed by his adoring fans who screamed "RACIST" at the proceedings against him from day one and to this day truly believe that he is indeed searching for the 'real killers'.
