It was a stunning dress back in 1966. And in 2009, it's still a winner.

The silver frock first worn by Katy Baxter's granny has helped the teenager through to the finals of Miss England.

Katy, 18, had to wear something 'recycled' for her semi-final against 57 other girls a fortnight ago.

She said: 'You could wear an old dress or make up something yourself from old crisp packets, as one girl did.

'My mother had just had Gran's old dress dry-cleaned two weeks earlier and she suggested that I tried it on. It fitted perfectly and I absolutely loved it.'

The lurex frock was worn by Margaret Sloman, now 76, while she was modelling at a motocross event in Kent.

Mrs Sloman, who lives in Exeter, bought the dress in either France or Italy during a summer holiday. Her daughter - Katy's mother - Julia Baxter said: 'My mother is absolutely delighted that the dress has come to life after all these years.'

The Miss England final is taking place in London next month.

Meanwhile Katy, from Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, is awaiting her exam results to see if she has the grades to study business management at Exeter University.

She also is holding a series of local fundraisers for the pageant's three nominated charities, B-eat, the National Autistic Society, and the Variety Club of Great Britain.

Supporters can donate via www. giftshare.com/katybaxter.

The winner goes on to contest the Miss World crown in South Africa at the end of the year.

Not a black girl, I was a brunette with a sun tan, now silver haired. Never should have worn orange. ‘9)

Although it looks like a sack, sometimes simplicity brings out the beauty of the wearer.

Exactly.

I had one too, but it was hot pink. Don’t remember what shoes I wore with it. I made mine. I was sixteen and now I can’t sew a stitch or rather don’t have the time.

I don't mind the shoes and I love the dress.

Maybe her grandma could loan something to our First *cough* Lady to help her dress for her position.

“Frock” is the right word. ‘60s fashions were awful.

Not all of them :)

Click here for a couple of pics, scroll through them to find the ones from the 60s, to see what I mean :)

Here's a Balenciaga form the 1960s. I love that suit.

Yeah. She needed go-go boots.

But it’s cute and even somewhat modest. I like her in it. I think I’d let my daughters dress in something like it.

A bath towel would be more shapely and stylish.

Ya know, I’ve been waiting for the “bath towel” competition.

LOL. I hope you have a sense of humor.

Many of us male human beings refer to them as Red FMPs. I will not expand the acronym on the public board.

The only thing that makes the dress look dated is the fact that it isn’t skin tight on her.

i don't think it should be skin tight, but it is too loose on her... it fits the grandmother better... she seems to be more "shapely" than the granddaughter...

Marlo Thomas as That Girl was able to pull off this style in a chic way...
