Teen sails into Miss England final wearing the same dress her grandma was modelling in 1966

It was a stunning dress back in 1966. And in 2009, it's still a winner.
The silver frock first worn by Katy Baxter's granny has helped the teenager through to the finals of Miss England.
Katy, 18, had to wear something 'recycled' for her semi-final against 57 other girls a fortnight ago.
She said: 'You could wear an old dress or make up something yourself from old crisp packets, as one girl did.
'My mother had just had Gran's old dress dry-cleaned two weeks earlier and she suggested that I tried it on. It fitted perfectly and I absolutely loved it.'
The lurex frock was worn by Margaret Sloman, now 76, while she was modelling at a motocross event in Kent.
Mrs Sloman, who lives in Exeter, bought the dress in either France or Italy during a summer holiday. Her daughter - Katy's mother - Julia Baxter said: 'My mother is absolutely delighted that the dress has come to life after all these years.'
The Miss England final is taking place in London next month.
Meanwhile Katy, from Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, is awaiting her exam results to see if she has the grades to study business management at Exeter University.
She also is holding a series of local fundraisers for the pageant's three nominated charities, B-eat, the National Autistic Society, and the Variety Club of Great Britain.

I agree about the shoes - the dress is simple and elegant and the shoes should have been open and strappy - very delicate -
As much as women pay for clothes, they should wear them for a couple generations.
In 1966, a girl would most likely wear white or silver go-go boots with that dress.

Exactly what I said above! Slightly lower, open-toed and with straps are great, silver or silver-grey .... A little bit thicker heels - the ones she has are too narrow and “tippy” looking. Unbalanced.
Low cut sandals? Nope.
Boots? (Or some other 60’s rip-off/copy-cat) Of course not.
I doubt she'd let you.
i also agree about the shoes, but the bigger issue is, why in the WORLD is robt on this thread contemplating the proper footwear for this dress????
The only thing that makes the dress look dated is the fact that it isn’t skin tight on her. Today, most girls would have the dress 2 sizes smaller so that it was pulled tight to her figure.

You are right. I wasn’t old enough in the 60s and 70s to be wearing heels of any style. I was still wearing my urrgly school uniform shoes. But I went back and looked at pictures of what my older relatives were wearing, and the clunky heels came later, as you said, in the 70s. It would have been, like you said, a spike heel, squarish, or perhaps even a pointed-toe, kitten heel shoe. But where are you finding the clunky heels? The last nice, work appropriate pair I have I bought in the late 90s. Now all I am finding are ballet flats, wedges, platforms or spikes like in the pictures at the link I posted above. Even my beloved Stuart Weitzman is fresh out.

Although it looks like a sack, sometimes simplicity brings out the beauty of the wearer.

That is 1966. I was 5 and remember looking at the teenagers next door dressing like that.

In the 60’s I had a bright orange sack dress with little cap sleeves that was OK on me at the time. When I think back on it, it was pretty bad and orange wasn’t a good color for me. LOL!

Truth be told! Unless you have a darker skin hue, orange is not a good color.
Mustard and orange for black girls looks great!
The hetero guys don’t even notice she’s wearing shoes.
