FAA -- Billy (Mays) Wasn't Wearing a Seat Belt on Plane

The FAA is already deflecting blame for the death of Billy Mays -- claiming the legendary TV pitchman wasn't wearing a seat belt when he took a shot to the head during a rough landing on a flight he was on yesterday.

Here's what we know -- Billy Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13 in Tampa that something struck him in the head -- here's Billy's actual quote:

"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

We called the FAA for comment, and a spokesperson told us, "The passenger needs to wear a seat belt during landing and he didn't."

A spokesperson for US Airways did not want to comment until more information comes to light.

Billy posted about it last on his Twitter last night, saying, "Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air."

I thought the stewardesses always check to make sure everyone’s got their seatbelts fastened when it’s time to land. Did he unfasten his?

I’m wondering how a seat belt would have helped him if things were falling and something struck him on the head.

Um, and just how does not wearing a seat belt cause injury from things falling from the Overhead? i.e., Irrelevant attempt to complicate something that is probably pretty straightforward.

US Air sucks but I didn’t think they killed people.

It wouldn’t, which makes the FAA’s preemptive defense more than a little funny.

Besides, why the hell is the FAA talking about this? Mays didn’t fly Goobermint Airlines. But give it time, Obama will get to them.

fyi...

FAA spokeswoman tells BNO News that TMZ.com incorrectly quoted her, says she never said Bill Mays was not wearing seat belt during landing.

It’s time the FAA made mandatory the wearing of helmets by each passenger.

I don’t buy it. I fly more often than most and I can’t remember the last time I saw someone NOT wearing their seatbelt during takeoff or landing.

If he was,in fact, hit on the head while landing and that injury does,in fact, prove to be the cause of his death it wouldn't matter to me if he wasn't wearing his seatbelt...as long as he was,in fact, seated when it happened.Stewardesses don't like...AT ALL...to see people not seated during landing so it seems unlikely that he was unseated.

If that's the best that US Air will be able to do in a lawsuit then they needn't bother. And for that matter it seems that the plane's manufacturer could also be sued for a faulty overhead compartment latch.

Enforcement of rules is sometimes different in "first class." But even the most relaxed flight attendant will belt themselves to a seat, even if only 10 seconds before touchdown. It's plane ;-) stupid to undergo a landing sans seatbelt.

I always thought the stewardesss walked through the cabin making everyone to put on their seatbelts prior to landing. Did Billy refuse to obey? I cannot see that happening? Something does not make sense here? Is there a cover-up going on hear?

Gee, I wonder if the news channels will run Billy Mays coverage 24/7 like Michael Jackson?

And another how did the FAA know he was not wearing a seatbelt, at this early stage of the news cycle?

Epidural Hematoma cases

On February 20, 1998, 38 year old Indian cricketer Raman Lamba was hit on the head by a cricket ball while fielding without a helmet. Although Lamba walked off the field and the injury did not appear to be serious at the time, he succumbed to internal haemorrhage three days later.

On April 17, 2003, at age 72, Robert Atkins (nutritionist), slipped on the ice while walking to work, hitting his head and causing bleeding around his brain. He lost consciousness on the way to the hospital, where he spent two weeks in intensive care. His death certificate states that the cause of death was “blunt impact injury of head with epidural hematoma”.

On March 18, 2009, actress Natasha Richardson died as a result of an epidural hematoma sustained two days earlier while skiing in Mont-Tremblant, Québec, Canada. Like many patients, she had a lucid interval where she did not exhibit any symptoms until approximately an hour after her fall when she complained of a headache. By the time she reached medical care, the hematoma had already caused significant damage.

If something hit him in the head, it is no doubt the fault of the idiot passengers who have to open and close the overhead compartments a thousand times during the course of a flight. They’re the same ones who like to roam the aisles endlessly and who have to switch seats with their family members continuously during the flight.
