On July 4 from 12:01 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., anyone—resident and non-resident—can fish in any public water in North Carolina, including coastal waters, without the purchase of a fishing license or trout privilege license. slideshow On July 4 from 12:01 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., anyone—resident and non-resident—can fish in any public water in North Carolina, including coastal waters, without the purchase of a fishing license or trout privilege license.

All other fishing regulations, such as fish length and daily possession limits, as well as bait and tackle restrictions and park-use fees, apply.

Authorized by the N.C. General Assembly and started in 1994, North Carolina’s annual free fishing day, which always falls on July 4, was created to encourage people to go fishing and promote North Carolina’s vast aquatic resources.

“Even with the cost of fishing licenses, fishing is a relatively inexpensive family pastime that can be enjoyed year-round by children and adults,” said Kyle Briggs, a fisheries program manager with the Commission.

There is no shortage of places where anglers of all ages can go to reel in a variety of fish — from largemouth bass and catfish in coastal rivers to striped bass, crappie and sunfish in Piedmont reservoirs to trout and smallmouth bass in cool, mountain streams.

Just be sure to give the fish you catch to an Obama voter.

You feed them today, your neighbor feeds them tomorrow.....lather, rinse, repeat.

Here in WV, a combination hunting/trapping/fishing license is $33 plus $10 for a “trout stamp.” Antlerless deer stamps are $10. Next year I turn 65, so all I’ll need is my DL plus a stamp for each antlerless deer I harvest.

I’ve lived in NC nearly all my life, and never knew about this program.

I’m relieved that it’s of long standing, actually. My first reaction was that tourism must be off really badly this year.

But, better enjoy it while you can. Our eponymous Governor DueDue is still casting about for loose change, having already raided the “Education Lottery” and now trying to tax out of state internet sales transactions.

States with a large influx of northeasterners or Californians, beware. This is your fate.

We have a free fishing day here in Michigan as well but I don’t pay attention to when it is because I always have a license anyway.

I tend not to go anywhere near the coastal beaches or any large body of water during the week of July 4, here in NC. It’s been a madhouse for as long as I can remember. Guess that’s why I never knew.
