While the Score foundation’s focus has been on shelter and educational services for victims of domestic violence here and in Dallas, and is best known for the annual Jason Witten Football Camp that begins today with 1,800 local kids registered, Witten said the children’s emergency room project presented “an amazing opportunity to give back.” After about year of pondering what they would like to see done with their gift to the children’s hospital, Michelle Witten said the family had to make their own emergency room visit with one of their children. If I’m reading this right, Mrs. Witten, despite being married to an NFL player, is still an ER nurse? It does not say former, which would imply that is is still taking shifts at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. That would be dedication.
My wife is an RN (though not in an ER). She loves her job, but if I was making what an NFL player makes, I don’t think she would keep her job.
Obviously, different people have different preferences and priorities. They most likely don’t need her income to put food on the table or shoes on the boys. Perhaps she just loves what she does.
Also, I can never see Parkland Hospital, Dallas, without thinking of November 22, 1963.
He really is one of the good guys in the NFL. In addition to being active in his native TN he is also very involved in Dallas area philanthropic concerns. For many players it’s part of their job description, being perceived as “giving back to the community” and I suspect a fair number of them are dragged to events by their agent, but for Witten, helping children seems to be a deeply personal mission. And he comes from a bit of a challenging background himself, which makes his high character all the more impressive.
I spent 7 years at Parkland from 1981 to 1988 - it’s very special place.
