I saw on CNET that somebody has figured out how to unlock the tethering feature for ATT finally even before they officially release it.

May make an iphone worth it now...

Tethering unlock takes about 10 seconds. You can do it from the phone.

You said — May make an iphone worth it now...

Can you imagine the network that AT&T is having to bolster about now, and has been for the last two years? With AT&T having to keep up with all this web traffic that all the other networks never have to put up with, this will really make AT&% a first class network.

Also, look at it this way, too. Every single iPhone sold here in the U.S. is going to go on AT&T’s network and they all have to have a data plan. That’s because people use it whether they really “want to” or not. I mean the features are *there* on the iPHone, in such a way, that you’re using features (on the network) whether you realize it or not. It’s so darned easy to use...

And so, that means AT&T is getting a whole lot of traffic they have to supply to all these iPhone users. That makes for a powerful cel phone network, which is going to serve them well in the long run, in comparison to the other ones around.

Yes. There are several ways of doing it. I tried http://www.ismashphone.com/2009/06/activate-internet-tethering-now-on-iphone-os-30.html and it worked beautifully. It's just a matter of tweaked network settings-- no software or jailbreaking needed. It works really well, providing Internet access to your PC or Mac via Bluetooth or USB (the latter will keep your iPhone charged, too). Of course, what's unknown is what AT&T is going to do to folks it detects doing such things. None of us have received our first bill yet... It's very much a try-at-your-own-risk sort of thing. For me, it's a great emergency tool for when I need a real keyboard and file system but can't get onto a WiFi hotspot.
