Jerri Gray Has Been Charged With Neglecting Her Teenage Son Alex
A mother is being charged with neglecting her obese teenage son, raising issues about whether the government has the right to intervene in one's family life.
Born and raised in South Carolina, Alexander Draper grew up to reach a dangerous 555 pounds by the age of 14. That's when law enforcement stepped in.
"The first and foremost concern is Alexander's health," Lt. Shea Smith told CBS News.
Alexander's mother, Jerri Gray, was charged with unlawful neglect of a child for allowing him to become obese.
"There have been opportunities to get Alexander some treatment over the course of the last several months and unfortunately some of those things have not been taken advantage of," Smith said.
But Gray, released from jail Monday on $50,000 bond, says she does not have enough money to get her son the treatment he needs....
Definitely child abuse.
To get him to exactly 5-5-5 is actually somewhat of an accomplishment.
“a dangerous 555 pounds...”
Why? When he hits a certain weight will he become violent?
He’s just Big Boned.
He’s stocky.
Clemson football candidate...........His SAT has already been taken for him....by some Florida State student using those “free text books” from Alabama.
Neglect? Doesn’t look he was being neglected at meal time.
But she has enough money to feed him sufficient amounts of food to maintain that incredible weight? Besides, the issue is not just what she can do now. The issue is where was she when he was putting all this weight on in the first place?
That’s retarded. If Angelina Jolie were raised in that house by that mother I guarantee you she would still be skinny. Carrie Prejean, same thing.
The treatment is too expensive? How much is her Piggly Wiggly tab? (Or does she pay for food?)

John Semmens, did you write this??
I got an idea - how about not feeding him for a month or so - would fix a couple of problems - the money thing and the weight thing!
??? = “thang”, IIRC.
The food bill has to be more expensive than the “treatment”.
No doubt she had a hand in feeding him, but hardly an offense the law needs to be involved with. If you go down that road, any kid, found in any unsanctioned behavior, will lead to charges against parents. In the all too common problems of kids on drugs, pregnant or STD positive, shouldn’t the parents be dragged into a jail cell for enabling their little darlings by doing too much of the wrong things and too little of the right ones?
But what was the point of throwing her in jail other than some prosecutor/LEO types wanna make their bones? They could just take the kid away from her and that would be painful enough.
Poor kid was an emotional eater. Left on his own a kid will find something to get into....drugs, alcohol, food, gangs etc.... I guess sports was out of the question at his size....
Prayers he gets his life in order and overcomes this.....
>>Hes stocky.<<
One of the funniest things I’ve read in a week!
I almost spewed coffee.
