The problem with your line of reasoning is that the NYPD didn't see these guys as "bad apples" because they didn't look very hard.....Having to make big payouts to the very few defendants who can come up with absolute proof of innocence sends a message to the brass that they should look harder for the bad ones.

So what's a police department supposed to do? Daily drug/alcohol screening? Daily polygraph exams? Apart from the usual steps how far is the department required to go to ensure that none of their officers are even guilty of jaywalking or littering?

Daily drug/alcohol screening?

Yep.

Daily polygraph exams?

Yep.

I'm in favor of monthly financial audits for cops.

I'm in favor of monthly random cavity searches for cops.

Apart from the usual steps how far is the department required to go to ensure that none of their officers are even guilty of jaywalking or littering?

We ain't talking about jaywalking, Pollyanna. We're talking about perjury, subporning perjury, malfeasance, misfeasance, deprivation of Civil Rights under false color of authority while armed, and mopery with intent to creep.

Not only should these cops be stripped of everything they own, the City should be bankrupted.

Taxpayers are responsible for the Governments they elect.

Well, a big first step would be that police have to agree to no plea bargaining on any crimes they are personally charged with, and maximum sentences--nothing less if found guilty. Plus, they must pay for their own defense. All this in an agreement before they are hired. And lets not forget, full financial restitution to the victims from the officer's personal finances. If he doesn't have enough to pay off, the City must pay the judgement but then must (no choice) actively pursue collection for at least 50 years.

What I see as a real problem is that when charged, the union immediately jumps to their aid, and after months and years of justice delayed, they get a light punishment. No real deterrent for the next guy. Get the union out of it and on the sidelines. Sure, this sounds really draconian, but police have a lot of power and we must have very strong measures to prevent abuse of that power.

The NYPD are not going to admit to nothing! They’ll brag on ‘em and carry’em high and lie thru their teeth.Their defense will deny everthing...it’s them against exposure and justice.Look here...Cops have an above normal paying job for doing nothing and sitting on their ass.

When they get real bored...they beat up on the enemy...the Public... cause they know they can get by w/it.They are leaches on the taxpayers payroll that fabricate fear to maintain a job.

I’m sick and tired of hearing they put their lives on the line everyday...like their going to the front of the line in a heated military battle.

Clearly defined...they are city tax collectors..if they collect no taxes...they have NO JOB.The majority of cops never use their firearms thru out their whole careers.

They need extra cash?...they sell drugs or steal from the public.

And no. I’ve never been in trouble w/ the law and don’t expect to...I’ve just got a keen eye for dead weight!
