People can be nuts over their cars. I came back to my car in a rather dimly lighted parking garage to find a woman and the person in charge of the garage standing beside my car. the woman was very agitated and accused me of denting her door when I open my door. I knew I had not touched her door so I bent over to look at the supposed damage. It was several chunks of mud stuck to her car door which I flicked off with my finger nail. then I told her she needed to have her car washed.
I can sympathize with your experience, but our society has become so self-centered and unmannerly that no thought is given to the feelings and sensitivities of others. So many people believe that if they embrace the liberal agenda, they exculpate themselves of their selfish and boorish behavior.
