I got a question. We have a neighbor kid who's apparently learning to play. He's not bad just not good. Lacks rhythm and his timing is off. He practices using an amp that's seems to be at full volume - you can even hear the distortion at times.

My question is this: Have any of you guitar players ever subjected your neighbors to amateurish playing via an amp? Don't most people learning to play get good before they decide to crank up the amp?

Note: The family is a big Obama supporter. They have an Obama sign in a bedroom window that can only be seen from my yard!

In the summer and nice weather I have my C. Crane radio out in the yard with Limbaugh and Beck on. I don't play it loud and consider myself respectful of not trying to make them listen to it. This Summer things might change.

What is the problem of just asking the parents to tell the kid to turn it down as a courtesy?

Most beginners who practice loud and poorly will soon give it up - he'll will soon annoy himself as well. If he gets better he'll use the headphones or practice acoustically.

Like the neighbor, I'm new to guitar. Still haven't much of a clue about where to find notes on the neck, the frets, blah blah blah. I'd bought an acoustic and even if I take it outside, my strained notes are washed out by traffic. Like yourselves, I try not to disturb neighbors unduly... 'cept of course with the lawnmower.

Now, once I know what I'm doing, and I'm not frightening mice or birds, then I'll start looking for an electric guitar and speaker. Learn to play the Blues.

Lord knows I did... but I was 14 at the time.

Now I just subject them to merely bad playing. :)
