PURDY, Wash. -- A student presenting an essay at Peninsula High School in Purdy on Tuesday morning took out a marijuana joint, lit it, and began smoking it, police said.

Read the essay here. See cell phone video.

According to Pierce County sheriff's detective Ed Troyer, the student smoked the joint during his essay supporting the legalization of marijuana.

He then finished his essay, sat down, finished smoking the joint and then ate the end after it was fully smoked.

The teacher of the class contacted the school resources officer, a Pierce County sheriff's deputy, who found a small residual amount of marijuana on the student, Troyer said.

The student, a 17-year-old junior with a 3.7 grade-point average, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana by Pierce County deputies and booked into Remann Hall in Tacoma.

I’d like to know the grade he received for the essay.

90 days in the local lockup might give him the needed attitude adjustment. IMHO

I’ve got to give the kid credit—he wrote a very long essay, perhaps years in the making. Too bad he has such a fascination with getting stoned. Someday he’ll be the smartest 37 year old still living with his parents.

Good for him. Altho it bothers me that he was underage, I respect him for his bravery & willingness to speak his mind.

Surprised he didn’t mention William F. Buckley Jr as a supporter of legalization.

Legalize Marijuana

Can I see a show of hands how many people here have ever smoked Cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana? I see none of you raised your hand. Well obviously no one would want to admit to a criminal activity in front of their teacher. But why is it that smoking pot is so taboo in our society? After all numerous famous intellectuals support marijuana. Al Gore is considered by many to be the leading figure in climate change awareness and environmental preservation. But few people know that Al Gore also supports the legalization of marijuana.....

...& please don't forget Hugh Downs, John Stossel, former Reps. Bob Barr & Tom Tancredo, Lew Rockwell, Judge Andrew Napolitano, Rep. Ron Paul, Glenn Beck (IIRC)...

You said — Surprised he didn’t mention William F. Buckley Jr as a supporter of legalization.

Well.., that’s because he knew the students would say, “Who?!”... LOL...

Judge Posner is in favor too. He isn’t a strict conservative by any means, but I would think still qualifies as worth a mention.

That Kid needed some Theatre in his background. Lighting up an Oregano Joint would have had the same effect on his audience, and left him without a Legal Problem.

I'll believe THAT when I see it. I remain very skeptical until I hear otherwise.

Probably true. That of course would give him a chance to bring up the youtube of WFB threatening Gore Vidal with bodily injury.

Hey, a 3.7 GPA ain’t stupid. The kid knew what he was doing. If you’re gonna call him stupid, you could say the same as Dr. Alan Keyes & the others who got arrested when 0 spoke @ the Notre Dame graduation (which I don’t; I admire them for doing so, 2b honest w/ you).

Here is Al Gore doing a Digg Dialogg where marijuana comes up. It sounds like qualified support for legalization. Interesting that he is advocating states rights.

Posner is a 7th circuit judge. He is one of the most highly respected judges in the country. Supposedly things like his views on the war on drugs are what has kept him from being in serious consideration for the SC. His age would now be playing a role. He is also quite prolific as he writes his own opinions (a rarity), published over 40 books, and has blogged to fill in the gaps on his most recent book about the economy.
