So basically a new type of cloud started to appear in 1951. Clouds are patterns of condensation. Condensation occurs at a cooling saturation level. SO, a new pattern of cooling saturation levels started to appear in 1951, after thousands of years of humans viewing clouds.
Sounds completely natural to me...

Completely natural. Often you will find these formations where there are sudden changes in surface features (like mountains) or where 2 or more air streams conflict with each other - they are referred to as "barrels".
Pilots know that flying through a "barrel" can be tough and is often better to go well above or well below.
