I’m still an M’s fan (I know, we’d rather be wearing paper bags over our heads) and even growing up in BC, I still followed them ever since 1995 and that wicked series. Congrats Big Unit.

The final game was the most intense sports event I ever witnessed. So loud you couldn't hear yourself think.
Now I’m jealous. Geez, what could’ve been if A-Rod, Big Unit, Griffey and Ichiro were together..(well, Jr and Ichiro are now playing together but still 6 GB’s).
yeah that was some series. didn’t randy, griffey then a-rod all leave right in a row and THEN the mariners won 116(?) games in a season without any of those 3? I don’t remember for sure.
Oh man, what a wrecking crew. Edgar, Jay, Griffey, Blowers, Tino, and little runt Joey Cora with his drag bunts, that series still gives me flashbacks as a Yanks fan even though they won the Series 4 of 5 years after. At least they got revenge of the M’s in 2000 and 2001.
Good job by the Big Unit, wish his stint in NY had been a little more effective.

Real story.
I took my nephew, 10, to his first MLB game years ago when Griffey Jr. was a young player and Unit pitched. Game was at Camden Yards, my nephew was a Mariners fan due to Griff Jr.
Jr. didn’t sign autographs that day and didnt even look at the kids. Randy Johnson, not only looked at them but signed autographs for about 10 minutes, mostly O’s fans. We were about 3 deep and got up to 2nd row and Unit said he had to go and walked away about 15 yards toward dugout.
I yelled, Randy, I have a Seattle kid going to his first game every and we drove 2 hours to get here....he stopped turned around, found us in the crowd and spotted the Seattle hat on my nephew. He jogged over and signed my nephew’s cap, then signed for another 3-4 kids.
Upon leaving, the last kid didn’t say thank you. Randy walked away two steps and looked back and said, “what do you say son?...The kid meekly said thank you. Unit said your always welcome but remember to be courteous.
I thought that was really great of him to take the extra time and then to give a quick lesson in manners. You don’t see too many pro athletes that did what Unit did that day and give a lesson in manners to boot.
He’ll always be one of the good guys in baseball to me.
When he was in his prime he was nearly unhittable when he was on.
It was fairly unusual back in the day, and baseball went 20 years between Lefty Grove and Warren Spahn. They were all saying it couldn’t be done, and if it could, Warren Spahn was an unlikely man to do it.
IMO, the use of middle relievers and closers ought to make it easier for a pitcher to win 300 games. We’ve had four of them in less than ten years: Clemens, Maddux, Glavine, Johnson. Mike Mussina could do it. He’s reasonably healthy. I doubt that Andy Pettite will make it due to arm troubles, but he might. Pedro’s arm has fallen off.
Roy Oswalt and Roy Halladay might make it, but that will be another ten years. I’m not so sure about the rest of the current crop.
It took a few years for all of them to leave. Rodriguez was the last one. But you did have Sweet Lou. :)
