Who today would qualify as a modern-day American saint?

There are men who say, "My wife is a saint for putting up with me." But an Ohio man, Jerome Coniker, may prove it.

The Vatican has given approval to pursue sainthood for his late wife, Gwen, who was 62 when she died in June 2002.

"When the church looks for sanctity, they don't seek phenomenal signs or revelations or apparitions. They just look for the virtuous life. She sure qualifies for that," said Mr. Coniker, co-founder with her of the Apostolate for Family Consecration in Bloomingdale, Ohio. Together they raised 12 children, and have 65 grandchildren.

I have built a shrine to him already.

Further, I have given up Christianity in favor of Limbaughianity.

That ought to get me a free subscription to 24/7.

It hasn't yet though.

We may not get to know many of them here on earth for they are the unsung, unhearalded heroes/heroines of the faith.
Though with little fame now, great will be their rewards!

The bible refers to all born again believers in Christ as “saints”.

Paul warned us against putting one over the other in deeds, or following one rather than another, emphasizing the importance of following Christ alone.

“sainthood” comes as a gift of God through His Son... not as a result of our own good works.

Saint? Not Obama. He aims higher.

What is the difference between Barrack Obama and G-d?

G-d doesn’t think he is Barrack Obama...

Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, John Roberts, and Samuel Alito are all good Catholics trying to save this country from the satanic forces of socialism. At least one of them has to make it to sainthood, although I hope no time soon. Got to keep them on earth as long as possible.

Given how much he is reviled, I think Thomas will be the first one beatified.

Well to be more precise, he FIGURATIVELY did it single-handedly.

“My wife is a saint for putting up with me.”

This is certainly true of the saintly Mrs. Lurkin.

My husband, because putting up with three rowdy little boys for two weeks during a camping trip alone with Daddy should qualify ANYONE for sainthood! Especially when the seven-year-old managed to snag Daddy’s “fishing hat” with the hook while learning to cast, sending said hat out into the river where it had to be “retrieved.” Oops! :)

whoever is a "modern day saint" is most assuredly unknown except for the people that surround him....

there are countless doctors, nurses, priests, and yes, even teachers, and others who go the extra, extra mile, not thinking of how much overtime they might get or what is the legally most defensive position, but give constantly from their heart and souls for the betterment of other humans......

there are Catholic bishops and priests who have discarded the Kennedy Catholic attitude...that anything can be rationized no matter what.....and actually have taken a firm stand against abortion and homosexual "marriage".....

no free will?...no right to say NO to sin....or Yes to charity and morality?.....

sainthood IMO is achieved by the selfless living of a life for the glory of God, by helping those afflicted with poor health,poverty,ignorance,addiction,etc....

I don't think very many people can achieve that....that is why sainthood is rare, and to be desired...

The type of person you describe IS rare, and you have no argument from me on that... But a true saint will have to agree with what I said. Applying the term to a select few of the body of Christ is simply incorrect. If sainthood is something which is "achieved", then salvation by works is inferred.
