After reading the article, I suppose it is possible the dog died of something other than overheating (altho that is still my bet).
I had a dog overheat once playing ball on a not terribly hot spring day. She was one of those retrievers who would not quit and my son didn’t realize she would not stop when she got too hot. She collapsed and he called my husband (I was at work) who said to hose her down until he got there. She was ok after awhile, but it was scary. BTW she’s still alive and still crazy to retrieve.
My Pepper was like that and he never grew out of it; toward the end during those final two weeks that the cancer ravaged him and he had to be evacuated manually he insisted I throw the ball; his last day, we played for an hour and when it was time he wagged his fouled tail and nodded his head as he lay on the Vet’s platform as though to launch into that place where the balls always fly and the ground comes up to meet your paws like a soft, white pillow.
Every now and then I’ll catch myself looking up for one last glimpse of his magnificently arched back and eager, grinning mouth.
Weird thing is he loves to lay on concrete in the sun and sometimes won't come in. He is such a dork I have to go and get him and make him heel. He ain't to swift but he is the biggest lover and baby on the planet.
