R&B singer Chris Brown said he is "not a monster" in a video message posted online this week ahead of a court hearing over a criminal charge that he beat pop singer Rihanna, leaving her bruised and bloodied.
Brown, who is not expected to attend the hearing set for Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, does not mention Rihanna by name in the video posted on the website www.justin.tv and circulated online on Wednesday.
But the 20-year-old singer of hits "Kiss Kiss" and "Run It" appears to address the accusations that he beat his girlfriend Rihanna in February while in a car in Los Angeles on the eve of the Grammy awards.
"I just wanna say 'What up?' because I ain't been out there in a minute," Brown said in the video, marking the only time he has seemed publicly to address the incident beyond an initial statement in February.
"Everybody that's haters, they just been haters. All my real fans, I love you all. I ain't a monster," he said.
A representative for Rihanna, singer of hit songs such as "Umbrella," was not immediately available to comment.

Wow, he has a way with words... I expect his next public statement will be "Not guitty, ya Honor."
So what, he "beat his girl down"? (slight sarcasm) It's nothing that isn't celebrated in most of the rap music that's come out of Hollywood the last 15 years. In fact, what Brown did was somewhat tame compared to what some other rappers have suggested be done to women.
When the entertainment elites make a fortune off of music that's telling our urban youth to act this very way, excuse me if I'm not outraged when they actually do.
I would have to guess he isn't an English major.
A black woman I know said, “you don’t know what Rihanna did to provoke Chris Brown’s reaction”. That tells me that “beat downs of women” must be culturally acceptable to some people.
Did you perchance ask her what exactly an example of something she could have done to justify that?
There has been a tremendous spike in violence against women here in the US the last quarter century. Many domestic violence experts will say it's only due to more women having the courage to come forward and to confront their abusers in court. Perhaps that has some merit.
But, I hypothesize that it was the "sexual revolution" of the 60's and 70's that did nothing more than objectify women and paint them as objects of men's desire and pleasure. And, in our culture, if something stops being pleasurable, you just throw it away.
Back in the day, not only would a man (a gentleman anyway) never strike a woman, there would be topics or words that would never be discussed in front of the the fairer sex. We've lost that (I believe) well-intentioned, if also slightly sexist, chivalry to the detriment of civil societal interaction between men and women. Another in the the long list of unintended consequences of leftist social engineering.
And then there’s this alternative:

Yeah, lets not disparage real monsters.
what a dumb freaking bastard. He is a lowlife woman beater and nothing more.
Apparently she believed the rumour going around that Brown contracted herpes from Rihanna.
Not really relevant, is it?
I was responding to a reply not the original story
Hmmm. Maybe Rihanna had a detonator for a nuclear device that would destroy the United States if he didn’t fight he for it. That’s the ticket.
