The 30-pound, 3-foot-long sea lion, believed to be just under a year old, was found on the Richmond Parkway near Giant Road about 1:20 a.m.
Richmond police called a volunteer with the Marine Mammal Center who lives nearby to help snag the sea lion.
The whiskered critter played a game of hide-and-seek for a while, maneuvering underneath a police cruiser near Goodrick Avenue and moving from one side to another.
"They typically try to avoid capture because they are wild animals," said Shelbi Stoudt, who oversees the center's rescue unit. "They don't know that we're trying to help them."
Finally, the rescuers corralled the pup, wrapped it in a towel and put it in an animal crate for transport to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.
The sea lion has been given the name Moody, in honor of Richmond police Officer Brad Moody, who died Oct. 4 after crashing his patrol car on a rain-slicked road.
