Perhaps getting tired of talking about himself, the taxi-cab driver asked me my impressions of London; I mentioned it was my first time, my first few hours, here, and that it all seemed a bit too much.
Then I asked, "What's the place furthest away from London, where one can go, where there's fewer people, fewer things? A lot fewer?"
The taxi-cab driver commented this was January, not a prime touring season, and that one best stay in the south of England, with its [slightly] warmer weather and better amenities, if he was new to the country.
I reminded him I was from the Sandhills of Nebraska; weather and amenities meant nothing to me.
"I suppose that would be the Shetland Islands then, but I don't think it's easy to get up there this time of the year," he replied.

Ping for the list; if anyone wishes on or off the list, please holler at me.
I loved this story, by the way!!
I wonder if he and the oilmen, or the Shetlanders, kept in touch?

For a while; remember, I was still a teenager.
A couple of times the next two years, I sent Christmas cards and gifts to the family, but never received any sort of acknowledgement. Later I learned they had moved to Scotland (after old dad died), but where and why I have no idea.
I kept in touch with the Texan and the Oklahoman until I went to the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants in the early 1990s; by that time they were nearing (early) retirement, and had flourished and prospered.
Time, the great Diminisher of long-distance friendships.
