BillBoy,

You were not paying attention. Fitzgerald was not going to win re-election by any stretch of the imagination. He angered people of all stripes because he was so independent. For example, he was the one who nominated the other Fitzgerald (a NY Democrat) for US Attorney. You know, the guy who persecuted Rove and Scooter Libby.

If Fitzgerald did not have family money, he would have hard a hard time beating Mostly Fraud because he was not getting a lot of financial support from Illinois conservatives and Republicans. After all, he was not a telegenic or dynamic figure (whiny voice and all).

IMHO, he was a good senator, and I fully agree with his libertarian positions.

Your incredulousness is either disingenuous or reflects your willful ignorance. (Probably both).

NC1984: The "other Fitzgerald," the New York Democrat Patrick Fitzgerald (actually New Jersey IIRC) is also the one who is prosecuting Blagojevich (effectively forcing his impeachment and conviction and removal from office, jailed Lyin' George Ryan, convicted Tony Rejzko (sp.?) and has the leadership of the Illinois Demonrat and RINO parties experiencing perpetual sleeplessness.

Former US Senator Peter Fitzgerald was generally conservative not libertarian. He had a weakness for environmentalism but otherwise, a solid guy. That the imbeciles and Demonrats who run the Illinois RINO Party were successful in driving Fitzgerald from his Senate seat calls for absolute scorched earth in the Illinois GOP until the McKennas, Bradys, Thompsons, Edgars, and lot lizard Topinkas are no more.

If Patrick Fitzgerald is a social conservative, I would gladly see him nominated and elected governor on any ticket to continue his admirable job of seeing to the jailing of Illinois's worst. Is Richard the Runt (he's not the man his father was) Daley next to be indicted? How about Barack Insane (for his dealings with convict Tony Rejzco?
