A tale of two snakes and why they were allowed to live (not political)

THE HILL COUNTRY — This is a tale of two snakes, both rattlesnakes, crotalus atrox, and why they got to live.

One big reason they're still among the living is that they got lucky when they decided to crawl across the road as I was going by.

And although they acted somewhat differently — one was extremely shy and tried only to sneak away and hide; the other was slightly more aggressive and rattled as he slid into the rocks to disappear — neither of them wanted to bite anybody, and that saved their bacon.

I don't play games with rattlers I kill every one I see. I've killed 57 so far this year out on the ranch. I run quail and deer hunts annually and nothing ruins a hunt quicker than one of my hunters getting his dog bit or heaven forbid getting bit themselves. I came real close to losing the use of my left leg when a rattler hit me behind the knee, he actually hit me in the tendon and it created quite a bit of damage. I spent several week in the hospital and close to 6 month's on crutches, going back and forth to physical rehab. My friends 7 year old son was hit while riding a 4 wheeler, they laid that poor boy's leg open from his ankle to his hip. The gentleman who owns a vacum truck service lost 3 fingers on his right hand, another who farms nth of town lost his thumb. As I said before, I'll kill every one of them I see.

Damn, at first glance he looks scary, but then I thought of the hognose...

Saw a snake in the road last week, it looked hurt but I wasn't sure. Would have preferred to get it to the side of the road and out of traffic but I thought better of it. It was about 3 ft, copper color, looked like a corn snake or something very similar.

He had a go with some western diamondbacks, but he would not handle a cottonmouth. He made it very clear on that show why, too. Only snake he would never handle.

“Damn, at first glance he looks scary”

First time I can remember seeing one in this area. Totally not vicious. It allowed me to push it into a bucket and be transported to a greenbelt.

These snakes like to eat toads and frogs. For some reason, we’ve got an unusual number of them this year.
