Kansas Coal Plant Deal
The Wichita Eagle ^ | 05/06/2009 | Dion Leffler

"TOPEKA - Peace broke out in the long-running battle over coal plants in western Kansas today: Gov. Mark Parkinson and Earl Watkins, chief executive of Sunflower Electric Power Corp., announced they had reached agreement on a plan to allow a downsized coal power station near Holcomb.

Under the settlement, Sunflower agreed to reduce its planned coal plants from two units with a capacity of 700 megawatts each to a single 895-megawatt unit.

The company agreed to a package of environmental improvements, reducing the carbon dioxide from the proposed power plant from nearly 11 million tons a year to 6.6 million tons.

In addition, Sunflower agreed to offsets to reduce emissions elsewhere by an additional 3 million tons."

This is not a complete victory. However, benefits of getting Sebelius OUT of Kansas are beginning to show! Folks, the greens will HATE this, I want to send a lump of coal in the mail to serveral I know, this is FUNNY!

It is kind of sad the black mail/green bribe stuff that Sunflower Electric had to do to get this thing approved but it is a great victory, none the less, over the idiot greens in Kansas!

Yep, they’re already flying fast and furious over our new proposed fuel refinery up here. I’d like to know where these watermelons get the money for all their lawsuits.

Sebelius leaving had ZERO to do with this......

And for you do allude to that is grasping at straws.

Period.

The whole idea of “man-made global warming” is a pagan religion. Obama and the Congressional National Socialists think they are high priests of Global Warming, beating on the drums, praying to the Gods of the Greenhouse Gases, spreading ignorance around the country.

Obama wants Cap & Trade, which would be a death sentence for our economy. I have to wonder if Obama and the other Socialist sponsors of this legislation are aware of basic facts. For example: 1) greenhouse gases are not evil, they are essential to keeping the earth warm enough for humans; 2) the most common greenhouse gas is water vapor; 3) CO2 is not pollution, it is essential for plants and humans; 4) CO2 is only a trace element in the atmosphere at 380 parts per million; 5) humans and their activities account for only 3% of CO2 emissions each year; 6) the earth has had cycles of cooling and warming about every 1,500 years due to variations in the sun’s activity and our orbit around the sun; 7) these cycles are beyond human control; 8) about 1,000 years ago, Greenland had vineyards; 9) the earth is cooling now, not warming relative to prior decades; 10) water expands when cooled (or frozen) and contracts when heated, so warmer temperatures would reduce sea levels as ice caps melt; and 11) a major reduction of sun spots in recent years suggests a coming mini ice age.
An excerpt from the March 2009 issue of The American Spectator: “All scientists agree that if man-made global warming is real, it would leave a fingerprint in the form of temperatures increasing with altitude in the tropical troposphere portion of the atmosphere up to a hotspot about 10 kilometers above the surface, reflecting the pattern of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Warming due to solar variations or other natural causes would not leave such a fingerprint pattern. Recently, higher-quality temperature data from balloons and satellites ... enables us to settle the man-made global warming debate definitively. The data from weather balloons shows the opposite pattern: no increasing warming with altitude, but rather a slight cooling with no hotspot. The satellite data shows the same result: no increasing temperature with altitude, no hotspot, no fingerprint, maybe again a slight cooling with altitude. Game over. QED. The global warming empire is rattling around but has not and cannot come up with an effective response. The data is the data. The science is the science. Man-made global warming is a hoax developed to serve powerful special interests.” (This was written by Peter Ferrara.)

Obama may not know these things, or he may be choosing to ignore the facts in order to create a huge new bureaucracy of socialist government control over our lives. Cap & trade would cause a huge decrease in GDP along with a huge increase in energy costs for Americans, and massive unemployment - probably higher than 15%. This will weaken our national defense capability versus our enemies, threatening capitalism and freedom.

Everyone should write to his or her Congressmoron. Remind them of the facts and the damage that would be caused by “cap & trade”.

NONSENSE

Sebelius APPOINTED the goof ball who probably broke the law in order to stop the original coal plants.

Sebelius dug her heals in and vetoed any attempt, in the past, to construct the coal plants.

There was a good chance that the last SEBELIUS veto would be over-ridden by the Kansas Legislature. Many Kansas Dems who had a loyalty to Sebelius feel no such loyalty to former RINO Parkinson. This deal would NOT have happened if Sebelious was still in Kansas -— PERIOD!

I think the analysis that hit the nail on the head was the person that pointed out that cap-and-trade would be a dream come true for lobbyists and congress to spread around massive favors. That is why it will eventually pass.

“The company agreed to a package of environmental improvements, reducing the carbon dioxide from the proposed power plant from nearly 11 million tons a year to 6.6 million tons. “

This is how it will be done from now on folks. Want a new plant? Submit to environmental blackmail via CO2 regulations.

Many green-mail groups are funded by a combination of "loser pays" (taxpayers) with seed money from a claque of tax-exempt "charitable" foundations belonging to major stockholders in the oil and gas business.

I called one of my US Senators today and told the woman I spoke to that Senator Bennett had better understand how bad Cap and Trade was and if he voted for it, I was going to do everything I could to get him fired.

I told her that he worked for me, not the other way around.

Then I told her to let the senator know that I had attended a Tea Party and have him call the FBI because a suspected Terrorist had called his office and given him a piece of my mind.

I repeated my phone number twice.

Then I thanked her for passing along the information.

i went to high school with the @ss hat that fought this.
He actually bragged about having weekly luncheons with Sebilious. This guy also calls Bill Maher his hero.
I knew his dad, he would be ashamed of wasting his semen if he had known his son would turn out like that.

Just saw our new Gov talking on the local FOX News affiliate station.
He said that he “reached out” to Sunflower Electric on his FIRST DAY in office.
I do not think our former Gov. EVER tried to negotiate much of anything with Sunflower.
She just made veto threats and actual Vetos time and time again.

So, you do NOT know what you are talking about!

Once again...Sebelius leaving had zip to do with this. If you think for one minute this deal wasn't in the works weeks ago...I can't help you.

But hey you're the FReeper that thinks it's just ducky for Brownback to support Sebelius in her new gig.

FWIW...you can have the last word.

You have just admitted that you are blinded by your hatred of Sebelius.
There was NO DEAL prior to Sebelius taking the HHS job.
Several ads are running even NOW on the radio, asking us to call our legislators to support KS jobs and low energy prices by voting YES on the Coal plants.
Why? Why spend the money if this was a “done deal”??

You need to be a bit more rational.

There is always a silver lining in any bad news, there is always a way to use any bad thing to advance a good cause.

Sebelius blocking this deal helps to show what a nut she is.

Good will come to KS, due to Sebelius being out of the State.

I feel bad for the damage she will do, at HHS, but there was nothing anyone could do to stop that.

Try the Serenity Prayer, you could use it!

I hoped that she would resign as gov before the confirmation hearings and then be rejected.

I agree with you, she will harm us working in HHS, but no more than any Obama appointment would. Getting her out of the state will definately help us.

On the whole, this was a positive event.

BTW, the coal deal would never have happened as long as she was the gov.
