"American Idol" winner David Cook's brother Adam, 36, died of brain cancer early Sunday in Terre Haute, Ind.

Cook announced his brother's death Sunday morning at the Race for Hope 5K in Washington, D.C. The audience responded in gasps of shock.

"I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else right now," Cook told the crowd at the benefit for brain cancer research.

Cook was both the event's grand marshal and running with a team that – as of last month – had raised more than $40,000.

"I lost one today," he told the crowd of runners and supporters, "but I gained 9,000 and I will be here every year that they will have me

I am very sorry for your loss. Cancer is so cruel. My youngest uncle died 2 years ago, at the age of 54 from gall bladder cancer that spread to the liver before anything was detected. He was stage 3 1/2 when it was found. It was the most horrible slow death. Your father was also very young. Cancer took my vital young uncle and killed him in about a year. It was devastating how he suffered. I share in your grief of losing someone dear to cancer.

David Cook made an appearance on Idol recently. I thought he looked rather sad or just not quite right. This explains it. He was already grieving for his brother as he approached the end of his fight with cancer.

Here’s the song David Cook wrote for his brother, Adam. It’s called “Permanent”.

Ohhhh, I am so very very sad.

Do you remember how he sung for him and when he was in the audience, how David was crying? G-d bless the Cook family. I am so sorry for their loss.

What a heartfelt song and a beautiful tribute.

RIP to Adam.

I am very impressed by David Cook. I am sure Adam appreciated such an openly caring and loving brother. I am saddened by his loss.

Hi, wasn’t it sad that Allison got voted off last night? I knew she wouldn’t win, but I think she should have been able to hang on longer than 4th place. I voted for her a lot. She was so good this week singing “Cry, Baby” too. I think it was her best performance and she got the boot! I can’t believe she is only 17. What a set of pipes she has! Adam was great this week too doing Zeppelin. I was hoping Allison would stay longer. I like how she was strong and not very weepy after she was voted off. I just plain like her. I bet she has a great career ahead of her.

Yes, it was sad that Allison didn’t make it further. I thought for sure she and Adam would be the top 2. Then again, having 2 rockers would be too much for some people. Not me, it would be just fine. I voted for Allison a lot too. She was my favorite and is awesome! She handled the elimination so well. I agree that she has a great career ahead of her and she’s only 17. Rock on, Allison!
