This sudden passing is a gigantic loss for serious ballet fans. Ekaterina Maximova was easily the most popular Bolshoi ballerina after Maya Plisetskaya during the Bolshoi Ballet tours of the West from the late 1950's to early 1980's--she was ENORMOUSLY beloved by ballet fans on both sides of the Iron Curtain, to say the least.

Here is a picture of her dancing as Kitri from the ballet Don Quixote, one of her signature dancing roles:

She was one of the greatest Bolshoi ballerinas, and one of the world's great ballerinas. Prima ballerina assoluta!!! Galina, Maya, and Ekatarina. Ekatarina's feet, her beautiful legs, her scene stealing pauses en pointe, and her epaulement! Brava! V's wife
