What makes them so much more lethal than a common 30/06 hunting rifle with a scope? Which one would you rather face?

Absolutely, true "assault weapons" are made to hurt REALLY bad, but optimally not kill. A wounded enemy takes 2 or 3 out of the fight, a dead one just takes one.

An M16 is an assault weapon then?We were told they were intended to incapacitate the enemy , not kill them.
