Three cats killed in pit bull rampage

April 20, 2009 06:44 PM

The owners of three cats killed by two pit bulls early Sunday morning, say some of the blame for the deadly rampage should be shared by the City of Las Vegas' animal control division and Metro police.

Debbie Howell says she and her husband Ken saw the dogs attack their cat and another belonging to a friend.

"We watched her cat Socks being ripped apart by these two pit bulls. It was terrifying."

Debbie Lenhart says the two pit bulls aggressively approached as she and her husband were in their garage. She says her husband tracked them to a nearby home, after using a golf club to fend them off.

The owners of the dogs admit their dogs were not restrained, but say, neither were the cats. And they are furious over fliers one family passed out, saying killer dogs live at their home.

All of the families agree other pit bulls in the area have caused problems in the past.

Adding to the cat owners pain is their belief that cries for help were ignored.

According to Laurie Patterson, "Several calls were made to Animal Control starting around 2:10 am, and to Metro. No response until after 6 am. My cat wasn't killed until after 5:30 in the morning."

But Animal Control for the City of Las Vegas says the first call didn't come in until 5:27 Sunday morning, and when officers arrived at 7:30 they could not reach the dogs because there was no response.

Clark County has 24-hour animal control. Due to budget cutbacks, the City of Las Vegas does not, but an officer is on-call for high-priority complaints.

The owners of the slain cats feel this incident qualifies and say they will lobby city officials to re-instate the service.

Any pit bull gets on my property and gets aggressive will get a lot more than a golf club.

Both those dogs need a .45 slug between the eyes. I volunteer.

This seems to keep happenning, and even includes fatal attacks on children. Maybe the immediate, on-sight killing of all unrestrained dogs should be authorized for any persos who can do so safely, using an ax, a basebal bat, a hammer or crow bar, or a firearm. That ought to reduce the threat level a bit.

personally, i don’t really care forthe pit bull breed - i think they should be regulated or even banned ... around here, most of the gangsta’ types think it is cool to own a “pit”. More of a fashion accessory to go with the bling and 9mm. It’s a shame because there is no true regard for the animal as a pet.

Great thinking there. Everybody knows what a threat a pack of unrestrained house cats are to little children. Meanwhile little poochie the precious pit bulldog is a friendly and goofy companion to all infants and toddlers.

Sounds like these people are hoping the City of Las Vegas et al will compensate them for the cost of the cats AND their significant pain and suffering.

These people don’t care about their cats. If they did, they wouldn’t leave them wander out where there might be stray dogs.

Doesn’t take a pit to kill a cat. If my shepherd mix could have caught Dad’s cat, he’d have killed him. Some dogs just hate them.

Poor little misunderstood doggies. The mean kitty cats provoked them.

Probably because there are so many stories about pit bulls going on rampages and killing and maiming everything in their paths. It’s a bad news breed in the local press.

The real answer to all such problems is the modern compound bow.

There is a stray outside that we feed (our pet cats are indoor only because, yes, outdoors is dangerous for cats). A next door neighbor has an aggressive German Shepherd that’s killed ground hogs. If the cat wandered into that dog’s yard and got killed, I wouldn’t blame the dog or the dog owner. If, on the other hand, the German Shepherd were wandering the neighborhood with another dog ripping several cats apart, I’d want the dog gone and possibly put down. A dog protecting it’s turf or it’s owner is one thing. Roving dogs killing things are something very different.

I never cared much for cats one way or the other, but I might get one for walking in front of pit bull houses when in town. ...then another. ;-)

That could actually be mighty lucrative along with being a way to do good deeds. .45 loads are great for bounty hunters. ;-)
