“It would be nice not to have the money involved, because you always wonder: Would she still want to be with me even without the money?”

No. She is a whore, and you are her customer. Whores do not love or even like their customers.

>> Don’t people think their souls are at risk when they engage in this kind of behavior?

A couple of generations of bringing up children without God in their lives, coupled with pervasive media that actually glorifies this hook-up behavior, and the fruit is ripe for harvest.

Oh you said it. Couldn’t agree more. There was a huge article in the paper here recently about the vicious, brutal young people getting sent to the prison here and the older inmates (older = 30ish) are terrified. They are monsters.

My brother teaches in the inner city and he told me the kids coming through now (he’s been teaching in inner city for 25 plus years) are nuts - literally crazy - and he’s never seen anything like it. He has more pregnant girls in his 5 classes than he has ever had and he told me that the bulk of them are not even the 11-12th graders but the 9th graders and one of them is pregnant with baby #2.

We are creating an entire strata of narcissistic, selfish, monsters. The Bible warns us of the day when men will be lovers of self and so on.

There are many reasons for mistresses to exist, some being less obvious.

To start with, of course, is money, but even this is multifaceted. Some women realize that they can neither live at an acceptable level of prosperity on their own, nor are “high value” marriage prospects. And of course, many have personal problems as well.

In turn, even though men may be prosperous, they might be equally undesirable as marriage prospects for any number of reasons.

A real problem is with the social system in which they live. Men from wealthy families are often compelled to marry women from other wealthy families, even today. The famous “runaway bride” scandal was a case like this. Since the marriages are not for love, mistresses and affairs are accepted as part of the deal.

Another reason is both sexless and unbalanced sexual desire marriage. It is not uncommon for many women to lose interest in sex entirely after a time, but this can be very hard on a husband with a strong libido. It works both ways as well.

All told, it is better for a society if mistresses are unwanted, either for women or men. But this is the exception instead of the rule in history.

Oh yes I did and, frankly, my pastor even brought up the point once that if women realized how much it meant to their men and how little time it took (he he, that we’d rarely say no. Our entire congregation cracked right up. The sermon was about men wanting respect and women wanting love but it was pretty hilarious. Meanwhile I’m in a very conservative church just so you don’t think we are wild or something.

I wonder if men have beer goggles and women have billfold goggles. Or something like that.

Years ago I knew several older women who didn’t mind the label sugar mama. They wanted young guys and were more than willing to pick up the tab for their companionship.

I recently saw a quote (been looking for it in vain) that went something like this: If something is wrong, doing it more efficiently doesn't make it right. Of course, there have always been women who sell themselves for money, and men who will buy (or rent) women for their own selfish pleasure, all with no "strings" - commitments.

The argument that "well, people are going to do it anyway so let's legalize, subsidize it, authorize it and advertise it" is just an excuse for people to avoid feeling guilty.

And if someone says "Well, I don't do (A, B or C) but people should be allowed to if they want, even if I think it is wrong" - often have other vices that they feel better about, if this particular vice is taken of the "vice" list.

The word and concept "vice" is sooo old fashioned.

purring that she’d reconsidered his offer: $1,500 a month would be just fine

I am so confused...

Does that get put on a W2 form or a 1099-MISC form? Are FICA and medicare withheld by the "daddy", or are they the responsibility of the "baby"?

Have you seen The Ladder Theory?

I’m not certain, but I believe that story was originally told by Oscar Wilde.

“Temporary arrangement” is a relative term.
And that reminds me of a story.

A seventy-year-old man shows up at a party with his twenty-year-old trophy wife.

When he goes to the bathroom, another old man asks him, “How did you manage to catch her?”

To which he replies, “I told her I’m ninety.”

Hi, re your: "The word and concept "vice" is sooo old fashioned."

We don't seem to have a contemporary equivalent term. "Counterproductive behavior" is the phrase that maybe comes closest.
