Nice story. I have heard that one should not shave a dog’s coat in the summer. The coat provides insulation... from both the cold AND heat.

Yes, I agree with that. We’ve never done it, and none of our dogs have ever fainted in the heat.

We shave our Aussie once a year when the weather starts getting hot...he pants hardly at all (he pants constantly in the FL summer when we don’t shave him) and we don’t have to deal with the “blowing coat” issue all summer. He’s happy, we’re happy.....

in desert climes, some people shave their heavy-coated dogs, thinking it gives the dogs relief from the heat.

We had a Golden/German Shepherd mix, and we used to shave her in the summer. But we did it so she wouldn't shed all over the place because in the summer she was an indoor dog, enjoying the air conditioning.

I shave my Shih tzus in the spring because they won’t stay out of our inground pool or our koi pond. Since their hair is long it mats up & they get smelly & dirty. I never knew they loved the water so much. They love to run over the pool cover all fall & winter. We almost lost our pekashih the first year we had her when we took the cover off. Sadie didn’t know it was gone & fell in the pool. Thankfully I found her in time. Now when the cover is taken off we dip their paws into the water so they know the cover is off. A doggie ramp was made for them that we keep on the side of the pool 24/7 & a hard rubber raft is always left in the pool in case they fall in.
