It's a nationwide issue, gun sales are up, and now ammunition is in short supply. Gun salesmen here in Acadiana say they've been turning customers down left and right. It's a problem gun shops can't seem to control, the demand is up, but there's a short supply.
"We're basically out now, we are getting stuff in everyday. It's just not the hot ticket items everybody's looking for." said Heath Gajan
Heath Gajan, a gun salesman at Lafayette shooters say the suppliers simply can't keep up, he says many don't realize that manufacturers only make ammunition during certain times of the year.
"So now we have to order cases at a time, instead of just a few, you know, we're ordering 10 or 12 cases a time and that's just depleting the suppliers." said Gajan
The buying frenzy started after the presidential election, many fearing the Obama administration would strengthen gun laws. Now there's a battle to keep ammunition in supply.
"I think there's a concern that we're going to loose guns or the rights, so I think that's the main reason." said Martin Crump
Martin Crump says he's not worried and believes the supply will go back up.
"It's going to reach a point where everybody buys as much as they can, and then it will drop off, because everybody's bought a volume and it will sit for a while." said Crump
But others say they're not waiting around.
"Something's got to give, Something's got to give at some point in time." said Robert Saucier
The Obama administration has suggested legislation that would reinstate a 10 year bill. This bill would limit ammunition magazines to a maximum of 10 rounds, of course this has gun enthusiasts on edge.
Hey, finally a place where I don't mind hearing that argument!
Looks like I got lucky.
I have a few hundred primers for reloading my 9mm. That won't last long.
I bought thousand round lots of Wolf 7.62 x 39 hollow point for $84 /1000 in 99. Still good.
I don’t think many American bought weapons are going to Mexico, but I’m afraid a whole lot of ammo is getting down there.
Check this out! My father-in-law visits a local gunshop today, he’s looking for ammo. A deputy walks in and a conversation ensues about the ammo shortage. The deputy says, “we’re expecting an insurrection in Tampa, and when it happens we’re already prepared to shut down all gun shops. This makes no sense to me whatsoever! I understand the ammo shortage is nationwide, why would a deputy in Tampa make such a statement? Does he khow something most of us don’t?
