Somerville It sure took President Obama a long time to get his pooch for the White House but he finally settled on a Portuguese water dog he named Bo. The real controversy, however, surrounds Vice President Biden who dared to buy a purebred German shepherd from a breeder and name him Champ. One could guess that the argument is over which name is the most inane, but actually its because, apparently, dog owners are no longer allowed to choose where they get their pups.

Once again, this subject comes up. Mostly because it's near to my heart - I've posted twice in the last week or so that I'm sick of these snooty "rescuers" telling people they should be ashamed of "buying" a dog from an evil breeder...

Champ is Biden’s nickname (from the lobbyists). Ironic that he named the dog Champ as well, no?

Poor dog. He must be embarrassed about actually living in the Biden household.

Can you imagine the furor if Bush had gotten a German shepherd? “In yet another concession to the extreme right of his party, Mr. Bush today chose a dog breed infamous for its use guarding Nazi death camps. It is currently unclear how many of the president’s dog’s ancestors chased and killed Jewish prisoners...”

There are Freepers who will actually argue that people shouldn’t breed dogs.

But, but, don’t you realize that as soon as people quit breeding purebreds, especially show dogs, that all the mixed breeds in the pounds will suddenly disappear?

That’s true and I agree and I will bet there were some breeders in there with envy issues too. The dog world is a funny place.

So I’ve been told (I actually had someone write me a nasty little note about a youtube video I put on with little puppies—and that was what they said, that I was responsible for the dogs in shelters). That’s like saying the parent who has the 2 children they can afford are responsible for all the kids in poverty. Complete and total silliness.
