Last weekend, Susan Boyle was just a face in the crowd. This weekend, clips of her singing on Britain's Got Talent have notched up almost 50 million views on YouTube. Her face appears on the front pages of papers in Britain and beyond, she been offered a seat on Oprah's sofa and has been told she is as good as guaranteed a worldwide number one album.
The rise of the 47-year-old spinster from Scotland has been a true global phenomenon. Last Saturday, viewers saw Boyle, with double chin, unkempt hair, frumpy appearance and eccentric demeanour, step onto the talent show stage and proclaim her dream of being a professional singer. The judges rolled their eyes and the audience pulled incredulous faces.
Onlookers, on set and at home, were rubbing their hands at the prospect of another hopeless, deluded loser being crushed by a withering Simon Cowell insult. Then she opened her mouth and sang I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables. Her voice confounded all expectations - the judges' eyes bulged, the crowd went wild and Boyle became an instant star.

I get no pleasure out of it.
She forgot about that kiss she got from God.
And she’s passing it along to us ... we are being kissed by God with her voice and innocent presence.
“That people want to see someone humiliated on national TV makes me feel like I’m in high school all over again. “
Oh please. Plenty of people watch car races because there might be a crash and they go to fights hoping a hockey game will break out.
LOL
* watching Ball Room dancing hoping a spin to go bad
* figure skating, hoping a Hamel camel goes awry
* Ski jumping, hoping for a failed landing
* bowling, hoping for a gutter ball
* diving, hoping for a belly flop
the list goes on.
I have no idea if the "judges" know....probably not.....it makes for good theater.
I told my husband that the sigh and sheepish grin of Simon's, about 4 minutes into the performance, was due to the fact he was seeing dollar signs, LOL.
Just think 50 million views on youtube in a week. The sales of her first CD will be thorugh the roof with people wanting to hear more of her singing. At this point it doesn't even matter if she wins the contest or not.
“... she even admitted to never having been kissed, ever.
She forgot about that kiss she got from God.”
Oh how very sweet and thoughtful of you to say!
And yes, she has a lovely voice.
She seemed to be the kind of a person who does not think more highly of herself than she ought, one who would speak to anybody and thankful for her blessings.
Bravo!
That youtube video is an emotional explosion. Absolute proof that Christ did come to bring us life and life more abundantly.
Right! I am so happy for her great success!
Susan Boyle is the anti-Jerry Springer!! YES!!!
What struck me. and I have commented before. was the way she finished her song and began to walk off the stage. She had accomplished her goal, singing for a large audience and she didn’t need or expect anything else. She was fulfilled.
I wish her all the best!
I agree.
Although raised in a musical family, replete with Julliard attendees and professional cantors, the gene missed me, completely. Never has any voice or performance stayed with me, reverberating in my head, until Susan Boyle.
I am just amazed. My husband, an audiophile who has tried forever, with only a little success, to make me hear what he hears, is amazed at my reaction and he agrees with me that this woman is very special and her looks are only an ironic counterpoint to this gift of an instrument that she has received.
The rendition of “Cry Me A River” was the best cover of that song that I have ever heard. If the early Linda Ronstad had been able to mature outside of show business, she might have equaled that performance. I know something of the music business and perhaps Susan Boyle is so authentic because she was isolated from it while she matured. It may also help that she likely never exposed that voice to drugs and more than an occasional pint or two.
am i the only person who is tired of this woman already?
I've been trying to figure out what she says right after: "I've never been married .. never been kissed ....shame."
She then puts her hand next to her mouth and says something like: "But it's not __________ yet."
I don't know if it the Scottish accent or the rapid speech, but I can't tell what she is saying there.
Here’s the link to hear Susan sing, “Cry Me a River.” It really is fantastic.

She’s already bigger than the show she’s on, whatever it is. Way bigger. So what’s next?
