I never thought one could overdose from nitrous.
Maybe the guy was wearing some kind of mask.
Read about a couple of idiots who were found dead a few years back after opening a tank of nitrous inside a pickup with the windows closed.

I know a Navy Corpsman who committed suicide that way in 1980. The mask was strapped onto his face when they found him.

Nitrous oxide is a simple asphyxiant. It displaces oxygen. Other than that, it's inert.

Back in 1975 at Keesler AFB a medical corpsman stole a bottle of NO2 from the hospital and strapped a mask to himself....When he was found his heart rate was 20 bpm and we started CPR right away...he was brain dead and passed away two days later. NO2 is dangerous when used inappropriately.
