Nice way to get your jet fixed. A USSR triple A service tells you all you need to know about Russia today.

They are building ICBM's as fast as possible BTW!

“This is certainly an interesting intellectual exercise, but what practical purpose would it serve?”

Helicopters haul all sorts of cargo. Generally the practical purpose is to deliver that cargo someplace that ground or other transport cannot reach. In case you didn't know, helicopters can take off and land vertically giving them an advantage in delivering cargo to otherwise inaccessible places. This helicopter could land the airplane on top of a building or on an island if thats where they wanted it.

". . . . this could just be a stunt and the lift capacity of the helicopter isn't anything unusual."

That's an Mi 26 (8 rotor blades) that can lift 44,000 lbs of payload. It's the largest production helicopter by far.

The next is the CH47 Boeing tandem rotor that lifts 28,000 lbs.

I have a photograph that I took in III Corps in 1967 of a wasted Hook on slings below a flying Crane.

My Lord, one of the few things I can think of that would be less safe than a Russian airliner is a Russian helicopter! Talk about going from the frying pan to the fire!

It’s always nice to see what the world’s most advanced military country is up to.

Looks like a great helicopter, I’d love to go to an air show in that country...must be AWESOME - kinda like our shows used to be.

GMTA, jw. :^)

Let's hope none of the admirers stand under that twosome.

I am a full time freelance photographer. One of my favorite things to shoot is anything aviation related. I don't think I would ever stand under a load like that, even to get a good shot. I am always nervous around helicopters, the idea of several thousand parts all wanting to go their separate way gives me little comfort.

I have a gig at the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In starting Monday. I shoot for them every year and it's like a vacation for me. I do it for the people who put it on so I get to go places and do things that most photographers can't. My favorites are the war birds. What an outstanding collection of vintage aircraft.

They have an entire section set aside for helicopters. It's way away from the rest of the flight line. I'm not sure what that says. They also have a separate area for the ultralights. One of their flying areas is over the press parking lot and there will be 20 or more of them in the air at the same time. Sounds like a bunch of mosquitoes!

Some of the shots from one day last year at on my website:

That Russian-made passenger plane is safer and more likely to stay in the air that way, than via its own power with a pilot!

"I am a full time freelance photographer."

Fascinating, we're in similar lines. That-is, doing freelance work.
Given the opening page at your website (see last paragraph below) I'm betting you live in FL, too.

"One of my favorite things to shoot is anything aviation related. I don't think I would ever stand under a load like that, even to get a good shot."

I certainly hope not; though, bet there're a few Liberals who would.
That's why I said what I did, know the slimy li'l buggers lurk here and y'never know... {g}

"I am always nervous around helicopters, the idea of several thousand parts all wanting to go their separate way gives me little comfort."

Too bad Vic Morrow didn't believe as you.
I'm a vet, served on a large post where we had a huge contingent of the 1st Air Cav. Saw every kind of rotor-wing craft there is, and the guys who flew 'em. The CH47 & Sikorsky Skycrane guys were the best behaved, older O4s & above and CW4s. Never had to pinch them.
But those AH1 Cobra/Apache guys, geshhh.
Caused me much overtime, but given their assignment I attributed their spirited take on life a gimme.
I do know what you mean, though.

"I have a gig at the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In starting Monday. I shoot for them every year and it's like a vacation for me. I do it for the people who put it on so I get to go places and do things that most photographers can't."

Is that sweet, or what.
You just have to be a bit more mature than the average bear 'round here. I say that only because you've learned the *secret* to getting into the "Off Limits" places, and (apparently) one of 'em's giving them something to get something. Unfortunately I've noticed "youngsters" can't seem to grasp the concept, or let's say they struggle with it? Not that you're asking me, but, I think your modus operandi is great, I really do.

"My favorites are the war birds. What an outstanding collection of vintage aircraft."

Mine, also.
Oh to be one of the youngsters back in WWII who had the opportunity and privilege to fly some of the now famous prop-driven war-birds.
~sigh~
I've a fabulous story of what happened to my bride & I when we visited some air museum located in east TN several years ago; but, that's better left for another time.

"They have an entire section set aside for helicopters. It's way away from the rest of the flight line. I'm not sure what that says."

Ummmm, the lesson from Pearl Harbor? :o)
I'd love seeing an exhibit of helicopters, it'd be something to behold.

Strangely enough my wife & I live about 45 mins south of the EEA in Oshkosh, WI. Around the time of the fly-in we sit out back and watch the most amazing aircraft fly directly over our house at all altitudes. For us it's actually an event,ie BBQ'g, grog, ceegars all-around. Fun time. And all without paying admission, putting up with choking traffic & ever present hordes of people. It's the best show around where no one ever knows what'll fly over, next. This goes on all day long throughout the 1 week+ event.
Really neat.

"They also have a separate area for the ultralights. One of their flying areas is over the press parking lot and there will be 20 or more of them in the air at the same time. Sounds like a bunch of mosquitoes!"

Wow.
I'll tell ya those things can be mighty tricky, don't ever want to get caught in either up or down drafts. If you do there's really nothing that can be done except obey gravity & fall. Even the grrrrrreat zerO can't alter physics. :o)

"Some of the shots from one day last year at on my website: Sun 'n Fun 2008"

Darnit.
Better check the website, my friend. The first page loads just fine, then the thing hangs at the halfway point.

Get it fixed, OK?
Then ping me again because I'd really like to view your work. ;^)

I remember doing manouvers in the north Ga. mountains,
they helo’d us in UH-1s, landed on a peak alright but come
time to go, the bird would NOT get above four feet above the ground, the pilot had to edge her over the drop off and
drop off at treetop hight just to get enough speed to lift.
We thought it was FUN. Oh to be young and stupid again.

The Mi-26 is a pretty amazing collection of parts and when they can all be made to work at the same time it can do pretty amazing things.

Last one I saw was on the ramp at Mt. Hagen, PNG. Two years later it was still where it was when I saw it last ....and still not working.

Hmmmm.. I just checked it and it runs fine for me, in both IE and Mozilla. I know you're not a beta tester, but if you have a moment go to my web site homepage: and let me know if you have a problem viewing one of those. Try the first thumbnail, the one that's labeled Famunda All Stars. It's a slightly different layout, only two rows of review thumbs per page. If it hangs there I'll try something else. I know it's a pain to have to be someone's beta tester, but it's the only way I know I have a problem. I use the web site to show much of my work and it's pretty important that it works for people other than me! A million thanks! I worked at the radio station in Enterprise, AL, in 1965. It's the nearest city to Ft. Rucker and talk about seeing lots and lots of helicopters in the air! My son is a helicopter pilot for the sheriff's office in Naples, FL. He flies their two JetRangers, not at the same time(!), and he also flies the EC-135 for the EMS guys. They share a hanger at the FBO. They have a really nice, nearly brand new, Cessna 182 with the law enforcement canopy and other special stuff. He has the best job in the whole, wide world! I have been a pilot since 1958, but am not current. Need a medical and my BFR. I passed on my medical this time because I had just had a total hip replacement and didn't want the hassle of telling them about it. Check the site if you will and let me know! Many thanks!

I must respond tomorrow, my friend.
There's this young thang (my wife).
She doesn't expect, she demands 5-Star service this time of day from yours truly. :o)

Tomorrow.

Have a wonderful, relaxing evening. :^)

Boy do I know what you mean. My lovely wife of 48 years is the same way. Of all the things my Lord has done to bless me over the years, second only to saving my worthless soul, putting this lady in my life when she was 15 and I was 19 was by far the best!
