It was ok. Cute lady, heartwarming video. But she wasn’t all that. She couldn’t hit any of the low notes in the bridge. If she were young and pretty, they wouldn’t go crazy over it. It’s a story because she’s a frumpy older gal.

Yeah, she was just ok. She walked out in front of thousands, maybe millions of people at 47, with no professional training and performed that song better than 90% of the people on Broadway.

My wife has a degree in music theater and teaches vocal music and private voice. She thought it was outstanding. Even exceptionally high natural talent takes years of professional training to develop and be able to perform in front of an audience. She did it on her first try.

That would have received a standing ovation no matter what she looked like. Her look just added to the story.

“It was ok”

Thank you Simon. Yeah, she was just ok. If not for the pity factor which greatly altered peoples perceptions of her talent. Problem is my friend, that neither you nor I have the kind of talent that can move millions of people on an emotional level. Granted that musical perceptions are an individuated thing... Some will love her and some will hate her. The real question is whether she is marketable. We can’t market her using sex, because she doesn’t look like she could sub as a porn star or playboy model. We can’t sell her on MTV because she doesn’t have that “video star” quality. Maybe on iTunes if enough people want to hear her. I find her voice amazing.
